Re: Format a Compaq

If its just the one drive in the PC its very simple.. when you format it you lose everything including your operating system (windows).. so you have to start by inserting the installation disk into the CD/DVD drive and choose to install windows.. during this procedure you can delete all data from the drive and re-format it before windows is installed..

Defragment/clean-up external HD

Hello Anonymous
Make sure you have backed up all the files you need to keep.
Store them on the computer if you have the space... until you put them back on the clean Hard Drive.
Your drive would be seven years old now. So... it would be a wise move to do a security type format to test the drives integrity before you loose your backups. Many Drives don't last seven years...
320GB is also pretty small these days. Suggest you use the old drive for eg. "Movies" and buy a new Hard Drive for your Backups as this drive may fail at any time.
Murphy's Law says that will be when you need it the most!
A 3.5 inch Drive (uses 5v&12v) and is more robust & faster than your 2.5" pocket type drives that run on 5 volts only. Also, look for a USB 3 or FireWire Port connector as these will ensure compatibility & speed on future computers. USB 1&2 are slow on large files.

DeFragging only shuffles the empty space around. Lining it up sequentially so that it's faster at accessing the data.
Re Formatting wipes the directory off the drive making it appear that you have a new clean drive. Previous files then get overwritten.

Do a security erase if you want to clean all data from the drive & test the drive for faults. This will return all available space available to you as an empty drive.
On a Mac, use Disk Utility. Choose Fat32 to allow interchangeability with Mac <> PC or "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for Mac Bootable Disks.
On a PC use Disk Management for a quick format to Fat32 or NTFS for Windows Boot. Or See Here for full details:

Drives are so inexpensive these days. You can pick up a 1Terrabyte drive for $99 here. Format & test the drive before putting it to use on your computer. This will be one of the few times you will get to test & experiment with the drive before you put your data on it.
You can always use a USB Memory Stick as a pretend Hard Drive to experiment with & test the formatting procedure. They use the same Partition & Format utilities as a regular Hard Drive.

Message on LaCie Hard drive says Hard Drive is full, but I cannot clear

Ensure that your system drive C: is not full, or you get similar troubles. When the external hard drive start giving this kind of troubles usually it is becouse of a bad FAT, the only solution is formatting the hard drive. Store your 15 GB elsewhere and format it.

Is it installed as a second drive, or by USB?

If by USB;
The time given is about right for USB 1.0 speeds.
Is the machine you are connecting it an older model and does not support USB 2.0?
It could be that, although you are connecting to a a faulty or inferior cable, or a device that provides multiple USB ports?

If it is connected to a motherboard, then it may not have the DMA (Direct memory access) enabled.
This can produce similar very slow transfer rates.

To check this, go into control panel.
Select System,
Select Hardware,
Select Device manager,
Select IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers,
There are two, the Primary and the Secondary Channel.
Select one and go into advanced settings.
There are two devices, 0 and 1
They should be on Auto Detection, and DMA if available.
If you see PIO only, Change it!

These are instructions for XP, which can drop to PIO only for some reason.

HI have been advised by a source I trust that full format is not required, and takes ages on the latest drives. I have had no problems since i have been using it.
Having started a full format, it might be best to complete one, rather than see if quick format works.

Click Start
Right-mouse click on My Computer
Click Manage
Click Storage
Click Disk Management (local)
Click to select the WD drive
Right-mouse click to DELETE the partition.
Click to create a "small" (32GB???) partition.
Try to format that small partition.
If it completes, then at least the first 32GB of the 1000GB is OK.
Delete the partition, and create a four-times-as-large partition.
Try to format that 128GB partition.
If it completes, then at least the first 128GB of the 1000GB is OK.
Delete the partition, and create a four-times-as-large partition.
Try to format that 512GB partition.
If it completes, then at least the first half of the 1000GB is OK.

Otherwise, if it fails, then WD has a one-year warranty,
i.e., they will replace it for free.

Note that WD also has a "Customer Loyalty Program".
If you have an old, out-of-warranty, WD drive (internal or external),
then you can buy a new WD drive, at a discount, from their web-site.

Compaq presario 900

1. back up

suggest you get yourself a USB hard drive, bigger than the size of all your important files. if you have 20GB of important files, get a external usb drive of atleast 60 or more I don't know if they actually sell that small drives anymore just make sure you have enought room.

2. get the the windows installation cd

with the windows installation cd you can format the hard drive in the setup

3. while in the xp setup

after the format you can install the windows on the computer again right away.

you may need to get drivers for your computer ones the windows is installed again.

you will need to find the correct model from the bottom of your laptop, and the drivers are available on this page

Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

I have a Western digital model wd2500b007-rnn
and I cannot get either my PC or my laptop to recognize the drive. I isolated the drive to another computer with the same error. It says USB device not reognized. I also tried a different port. I have not tried different cables. Can I retrieve the old data on the drive?

Did you find a resolution for this? I am having the same problem. None of my PCs can recognize the drive. Formatting seems to be the only choice but I need to recover my old data first.
