SOURCE: I had to exchange my last satnav as it wasn't

If you had a lifetime map upgrade for the old satnav I'm afraid it died with the satnav. Lifetime in this case refers to the lifetime of the satnav. Unless the new satnav came with a lifetime map upgrade also you'll either have to buy one or get the shop where you exchanged the satnav to pay for one. You can get details of how to update your maps at

How to update your Garmin Satnav maps

To update your garmin satnav map you must have your satnav registered. If it's already registered skip to paragraph 2 below.

1. To Register your Garmin Satnav
  • Connecty our satnav to your computer and go to
  • Select your country
  • Click on Register your garmin product
  • Follow the prompts
Note you will be asked to create a username and password. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again anytime you want to update your maps

2. To update your maps

  • Connect your satnav to your computer and go to
  • Click on myGarmin and log in
  • Click on myMaps.
  • If there's an update available it will be shown beside the name of your map.
  • Click on Get Update and follow the prompts.
Note map files are large so you'll need a broadband connection to download them. If you don't have broadband you'll have an option to buy the update on DVD.

  1. If The Map Is Too Large To Install To Your Satnav
When you go to download the map by default it tries to download it to the satnav i.e. not the SD/Mini SD card. You need to change this. When the website recognises the satnav follow the prompts. It will give you 3 options for the download destination.
    • Download to satnav,
    • Download to Computer and Satnav or
    • Download to computer.
As the website is updated, from time to time, the method of selecting the download destination changes. Sometimes it shows up as a drop box with a drop-down arrow showing your satnav name. Click the drop-down arrow and select the option to download the map to your computer. Sometimes it shows the 3 options as text headings with tick boxes beside them and you get to tick the option you want. Whichever way it shows up select the option to download the map to your computer. This will install it on your computer's hard drive.

  2. After it's downloaded the map should begin to install automatically. (If not double click on it and it will). It should be allowed to install to your satnav first as Garmin will not allow it to install to your SD/Mini SD card unless it's first partly installed to the satnav. This is so they can ensure that it's installed to the correct satnav.

  3. To Install The Full Map To Your SD/Mini SD Card
To install the map to your SD/Mini SD card, insert the card into the card slot of your satnav and connect it to the computer. Click the windows start button on your computer. Then click the GARMIN progam and then MAPINSTALL. This runs the map installation program. When the install program finds your satnav and you get the option to install the map there again by default. Click on the drop-down arrow, where it shows your satnav as the destination, and select the drive letter of the SD/Mini SD card. This will be different to the drive letter for your satnav. The map will then be installed to your SD/Mini SD card.

  4. Problems With Older Nuvi Satnavs Reading Maps On 4 Gb Or Higher SD Cards
When you install a map to an SD card older nuvi satnavs can have difficulty getting the satnav to read it. It will install to it without problem but when you try to operate the satnav then it cannot load the map and will close down the satnav unless you remove the SD card. The reason for this is that 4 Gb and higher cards are SDHC which operate differently from SD. To solve this problem you should use a class 2 SDHC card, which is the slowest type available. You can identify the class by the small figure on the card. It will be either 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10. Before you install the map format the card as described below. Also use webinstaller to check that you have the latest version of operating software on your satnav.

  5. Format the SD card with "Panasonic SD Formatter" available from rather than the standard windows format function. Select the fast format option and be sure you have selected the drive letter of your SDHC card as it will format your hard drive or indeed your satnav just as easily if you select one of them by mistake.

  6. To update your software or check that you have the latest version, you can download webupdater from
Connect your satnav to the computer and run the program. It will search for any updates to your software.
Class 2 SDHC cards are harder to find in shops today as they are being replaced by the faster classes. They are however still easily available on ebay if you can't find one in the shops.

I am traveling ion europe and have purchased a set of european maps for my nuvi 1300. i need to transfer the maps from the sd card to the nuvi 1300

If you bought your satnav in the USA don't transfer the maps to your satnav. The USA version of the satnav won't work in Europe. If you bought the satnav in Europe you should only have to plug the SD card into the satnav for it to work.

Garmin1240. Connected to PC. Now PC icon appears on sat nav & route map vanishes for long periods. How can I get rid of icon ?

Sometimes this problem is caused by a fault with the mini USB socket on the satnav. The lead appears to be pushed fully into the back of the satnav but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.

I went in and removed all my pictures from the unit and all languages except english. Now my map is gone, poi screen is blank and when I try to set a destination it only shows the interstate no city...

Check if your map is selected.
  • Press TOOLS the spanner icon on the WHERE TO and VIEW MAP page
  • Press SETTINGS the spanner icon (Or LOCALE on some models, the blue icon)
  • Press MAPS
  • Press MAP INFO on the bottom centre of the screen
Your map name should be there with a tick beside it. If the tick is not there press the map name and it will appear. This may solve the problem.

If the map is not there you'll need to download it again. If you've got a garmin account log into myGarmin. If not you'll need to register your satnav first. To register it
  • Connect the satnav to your computer and go to
  • Select your country from the dropdown list and click "Register your garmin device".
  • Follow the prompts.
  • You'll be asked to create a username and password. Keep them safe. You'll need them anytime you need to update your maps or solve problems in the future.
Once you've registered you'll be able to log into myGarmin. When you're logged in click on the myMaps tab. There you'll see the name of the map on your satnav. Under the map name you should see a link in small blue writing DETAILS.
Click on DETAILS and it should give you an option to download the map again. Download it to your computer or direct to the satnav and it should solve the problem. If you download to the computer use MAPINSTALL, which will be installed into a GARMIN folder in your programs list, to install the map to your satnav.

No roads near starting point

I assume that there should be roads there. It may be that the map is unselected.
  1. Press TOOLS
  2. Press SETTINGS
  3. Press MAPS
  4. At the bottom of the screen press MAP INFO
You should see the name of the maps installed on your satnav. There should be a tick beside the maps if it's selected. If there's not press the map name to select it. This should solve your problem.
If this does not solve the problem the map may be locked. To get information on how to unlock it go to
There may be more information there than you need but it has everything you could need about getting maps working on a garmin nuvi satnav

I've bought a Garmin Nuvi 215w. The gps does not display all the road names on the map. Is there any way i can update the firmware?

I don't think updating the firmware will solve the problem however if you want to try you can update the firmware by connecting your satnav to the computer and downloading webupdater from When you have it set up it will automatically check for the latest version of software for your satnav. I don't think that will solve your problem though. The satnav will only show road names that are on the map.

Before trying to update the software try this solution first. On the satnav press Tools, then Settings, then Map. Under Map Detail press whatever it says and you'll get a list of options. Press Most. This will show the most map details and will show any roadnames that are on the map.

My garming says no detailed maps found that support routing what can i do to fixed

Press Tools, then press Settings, then press Map, then press Map Info. There should be a tick beside the map name. If not press the map name and a tick will appear. The problem should then be solved.

If that doesn't solve the problem it may be because the map is locked. If so go to and if the satnav is registered click on My Garmin, then on Maps where you'll find the unlock code. If the satnav is not registered you'll need to connect it to the computer and register it first.

I have a Nuvi 250W and it can find locations already in the unit but it will not take a new address and it locks up when i push State. i really want a map update with the hope it will fix my problem....

It's unlikely that updating the map will solve the problem. You could try updating the software. Download webupdater from and when it's installed you'll get an option to update the satnav software. That may solve the problem. Or you could try to reset the satnav back to how it was when it left the shop by pressing the bottom right corner of the screen as you turn it on. However note that you will lose your saved locations if you do that. I hope this helps.
