    hi,
YES i have the same PROBLEM!

  • Betsy13 Jan 17, 2008

Yes, even upon installing original brother ink and following all the directions on their website (turning off for 10 sec., etc.) It still says there is no cartridge. Could it be the slot is broken? The other ones work fine...

hi I have the same problem , very stressing

  • Anonymous Jun 16, 2008

The printer will not register that the cartridge is in place and will not print anything because it wants a cartridge. I tried to push the metal piece up more so the cartridge makes more contact but it didn't help.

  • Maizy46 Nov 02, 2008

I have changed all my ink cartridges several times and still get the message that they are empty or near empty.

  • kosmo_gypsy Mar 04, 2009

Mine is doing the same thing. I have tried everything suggested here with no luck.
Also, how can I use the other functions of my machine? Without ink, I can't print, but I still should be able to scan to my computer. It won't work!

Do you use generic carts?
If yes try another cart (always best: original brother carts)

Open cover. Take all carts out. Close cover. Open cover. Display should give the order to place cart in. If not, place in cart and take it out again. Answer questions if you have replaced the carts. Do make a firmware update (see brother homepage of your country).

Yellow ink will not show on test page. It is full. New

Open it up and look at the yellow ink cartridge. Make sure all of the packaging is taken off, since it is new. Put it back in and give it a shot. Sometimes just reseating the cartridge can help.

This sounds like the chip on the cartridge is defective. Try a different cartridridge. Take the failing cartridge back to the vendor for a replacement or refund.
Your description for corrective actions taken are in-line with accepted procedures.

How do I remove the black ink cartridge to put in a new one?

1 Remove and Install Cartridges Be sure you have your replacement cartridges handy before you begin. You must install new cartridges immediately after removing the old ones. Caution:
Do not open ink cartridge packages until you are ready to install the ink. Cartridges are vacuum packed to maintain reliability. 1. Turn on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series. If a cartridge is low or expended, you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen. If a cartridge is expended, you must replace it to be able to print. If a cartridge is low, you can continue printing until the cartridge needs replacement. If you're replacing a cartridge before you see a message on the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series LCD display screen, press Setup, select Maintenance, and press OK. Then select Change Ink Cartridge and press OK. 2. Open the scanner. 3. Open the cartridge cover. 4. Squeeze the tab on the cartridge and lift the cartridge straight up to remove it. Dispose of it carefully. Do not take the used cartridge apart or try to refill it. Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets into your eyes, flush them immediately with water. Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children. 5. Before opening the new cartridge package, shake it four or five times. (Do not shake a cartridge after opening the package; ink may leak.) 6. Remove the cartridge from the package, but be careful not to touch the green chip on the cartridge. 7. Remove the yellow tape from the bottom of the cartridge. Caution:
Do not remove any other labels or seals, or ink will leak. 8. Insert the new cartridge into the holder and push it down until it clicks into place. 9. Once you replace all the necessary cartridges, close the cartridge cover and push it down until it clicks into place. 10. Close the scanner. 11. Press OK to begin charging the ink. This takes about 2 minutes. When you see a completion message on the LCD display screen, ink charging is finished. Caution:
Never turn off the Epson Stylus CX8400 Series while ink is charging or you'll waste ink.
If you see an ink replacement message on the LCD display screen, press OK and press down all the cartridges securely.

My yellow ink ran out and I finally replaced all inks this evening. Now, with all new inks, I keep getting a message that the yellow needs to be replaced. Any suggestions? I've turned off the printer,...

I had the same problem with mine but I bought a refill cartridge instead of a new one and went through three refilled cartridges when I found that it was that I needed a brand new one. For some reason, the HP printers and some other printers need to know that you are using the same brand of ink as the printer. if it is another brand it wont except it and it wont let you print anything! So make sure it is a brand new hp brand ;)

Changed yellow ink to new cartridge. Printer won't recognize.

I contacted the Brother site, the support function there. Pursuant to what I found there, I unplugged the printer for ten seconds and replugged. The message display then told me that cyan was empty, and that magenta was near empty.

I installed a new cartridge in place of the empty cyan, and that fixed it.

PRINTER WON'T ACCEPT NEW INK CARTRIDGE

From the Brother solutions website:

If the message "NO CARTRIDGE" remains on the LCD after you have installed the ink cartridges, then one or more of the cartridges may not be properly installed. Verify that the cartridges are installed correctly by following these steps:

Note
Cartridges that have already been installed are no longer vacuum-sealed, so it is very important that these cartridges remain upright. If a cartridge is removed from the machine and placed on its side, air may be introduced into the ink supply tubes. As a result, repeated cleaning will likely be required before normal print quality is restored.

  1. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet, wait approximately 10 seconds and then plug it back in.
If the date and time appear on the display, the issue is resolved. If the display continues to show NO CARTRIDGE, continues to Step 2.

  2. Open the scanner cover by lifting it from the right-hand side until it locks securely into the open position.

  3. Remove the black ink cartridge by pulling the white plastic hook (locked over the edge of the ink cartridge) toward you, then lifting the cartridge out.

  4. The LCD should prompt you to install the black ink cartridge.

  5. Reinstall the black cartridge. Press down FIRMLY on the top of the cartridge until it is fully seated. Push the white plastic hook towards the cartridge to verify it is fully latched over the cartridge's top edge. Repeat STEPS 2 - 4 to verify each that of the color cartridges (magenta, cyan and yellow) is installed properly, then continue to STEP.

  6. Close the scanner cover. The unit should begin cleaning automatically.
