Hmm, the problem could have been caused by Avast or possibly one of the windows updates, I've seen this happen if you tried to update to IE8 on a couple computers. Do you have a restore partition or restore cd to boot from? Since you haven't done much, I assume you don't have any data you need to backup before doing a reinstall. If you do not have a cd to boot from, time to get one from the manufacturer.

Powers up as far as lights but nothing on screen...no hard drive light could it be mainboard

When your computer starts up, do you see anything? such as the bios flash screen? try to do the following,as your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8. Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers, if you where able to start this, then you have an issue with a new install, driver, or update, which is a good thing, however You will want to choose Last Known Good Configuration option, you can get there from the F8 screen, instead of choosing safe mode choose that LKGC instead. If you are not able to see anything, then you might have a bad screen or yes.. the cancer of computer.. the main board is troublesome, and need to be replaced or repaired.

Hi! My asus notebook wont start up. i got a blinking cursor on the top left corner. none of the function keys seem to work either. I even tried ctr. alt del. but nothing happens. it worked fine...

It would apear that you have a boot sector error. The main system apears to be working. Ctr+Alt+Del will not work because windows is not loaded.
With your rescue disc in the DVD drive, just before it boots up repeadedly press F8 until you get the secondary menu that will let you choose Safe Mode, Restore, Rescue etc. and choose Safe Mode. If it boots all is OK and when it has finished the system should have repaired itself. If it doesn't choose restore, this will try to restore the system. If that doesn't work, Rescue is the only other option.
Hope that helps.

My nine year old changed my password on my asus eee 1005 computer and F9 dont work.please help it is kind of important to me

Is this your windows Password? Or the BIOS password? If you are talking about the Windows, you can simply press F8 at boot many times until you get to the Windows Advanced Menu. Choose Start Safe Mode and after it boots you might your Account name and the "Administrator" account. Log in as Administrator (usually with No password) and go to Start - Contorl Panel - User Account and click on you account name, and then simply remove password. Do not click on change because it will ask you the old password and you dont know it. If it's the BIOS password please let me know.

When i turn it my eee pc on it pops up to where it says windows and thats as far as it will but it will only load up in safe mode

Try restarting your notebook and hit the "f8" key after you see the first screen come up. Keep hitting the F8 key until you see a menu that says "start in safe mode" start in safe mode with networking......
Start in last known good configuration....Start windows normally.

Try using Start in last known good configuration.

Hopefully, that will solve the problem that is hanging up your windows from starting.

When i go to 2) advanced option wat to do next/...please tell me

The system restore is not in BIOS, As the computer boots begin tapping the F8 key until you enter the boot selection screen, once you are there using your arrow keys scroll up to "safe mode" and hit the enter key, Hopefully if you enter safe mode then you can attempt a system restore... Only other option that I can see is to remove the HDD and hook it to another computer so that you can run a scandisk...

Can't start up Windows says I need to reinstall

That file can be found on the XP installation CD.
You will need to boot up on that CD and select recovery console. Try this:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/restorehaldll.htm

You may also be able to boot up to Safe Mode Command Prompt and run system restore:
    1. Restart your system
    2. When the system first boots, type F8 to bring up the boot menu
    3. Select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option
    4. Log-on as administrator if needed
    5. At your command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    6. Hit Enter
    6. This will open the system restore wizard
