Mini-USB port has broken off from my 500 gb Seagate drive

Help! This is the exact problem that karaokemanhi reported today. Except my mini-USB port has completely fallen off and is now rattling around inside the base of the Seagate harddrive casing. I don't feel comfortable cracking open the casing, messing with hardware issues, but I feel this is a very simple issue that simply requires either a mini-USB port replacement or else a shell replacement for the hard drive. The computer repair people I have spoken with are suggesting I look into "data recovery" and replacing the hard drive entirely, and I am fairly convinced that type of solution is unnecessary for what appears to be a very simple hardware replacement issue.
Can anyone please advise? Also, I live in Seattle so if there is anyone in the online community that is local and could help me in person, please contact me! Thanks! Amy

Hi,

If you have space in your computer - simply open the case fo the External drive - unscrew the HD from the case, disconnect the cable and place into your computer.

All problems solved and it will run faster too!

Yeah you can probably just get the enclosure dissassembled. googling " how to disassemble seagate freeagent pro" pulled up a few links but if you're not comfortable doing that, try asking for help from local college computer lab geeks. I'm on the other side of the country from you so, can't help you much. The usb port that fell off was probably connected to the drive via an adapter so likely the hard drive itself is not damaged. Data recovery is much more expensive and I agree it isn't reasonable for this kind of problem.

I believe you are looking for this: USB Mini-B (5-pin) you are looking for the "socket"

Here is a list of products to choose from:
https://www.alliedelec.com/search/searchresults.aspx?N=0&Ntt=USB+Mini+B&Ntk=Primary&i=0&sw=n

Please note; This will be extremely hard. most of those products have no pictures and you are not sure exactly what you are getting, luckily they are pretty cheap so i would recommend getting a couple that sound right.

Good luck, be careful.

Hope this Helps.

The usb port is broken? how can i get to my info on the drive?

Open the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in some computer,
to access the files.
Or, for about $30, buy a new 'empty' enclosure, and transplant your disk-drie into that enclosure.

Power supply is the square device which supply the whole computer with power,it has many wires with connectors at the end of the wires, and most connectors has four pins except the one which connect to the motherboard, because it can have either 20 or 24 pins. The USB port on my seagate 500GB external drive has broken off, and is somewhere inside the case.

You should be able to pop open the enclosure to retrieve the hard drive. You may need to take out a few screws.

Once you've done that, you can purchase another external USB enclosure to replace the broken one.

Try using your SEAGATE Hard Disk on another PC , if it works then you have one of these problems,
1. Your USB Port in your PC (Or Laptop) is broken and you have to get another one*
2. You have a software problem (Try reinstalling your OS or scan for viruses).
3. The USB Cable has a problem (get a new one).

(*) some technician can replace your USB port or fix it, or you can buy a "USB Hub"

New Seagate FreeAgentPro USB eSATA 500GB power on light not glows

Thank you for your reply.

I have solved the problem with local help.

Printed installation manual of Seagate 500 GB eSATA external hard drive has not properly mentioned how to use power on/off switch once connected to mains. I could get local help, who has already used the device. On/Off switch to be pressed for few seconds after mains connected, sometimes it comes automatically once power is on and USB cable pluged to the USB port of PC if power supply is ok. There is no indicator for the power supply (before device glows) after connected to the mains. I was in confusion whether power supply is ok or not.

Finally, It was found that the problem was with mains power supply and I have changed the power socket and adapter.
