Question about Cub Cadet Garden
Inherited a 1170 13cd608g101 with a briggs 17.5hp(it was my dads)in a very sad state.I got it running ($362.00 later) it cuts grass great...for 20 minutes! it cuts off & won't restart for about a half an hour, then restarts and again worksgreat for 20 min. before in cuts off the idle fluctuates, then dies. it will restart again, but only run for 5 seconds on choke full on.what is going on?????????? It had been sitting for 2 yrs, I knew it was a task, but worth it. What was done mechanically: Drained old gas & cleaned out tank, carb bowl & carb itself, new fuel line & filter, air filter, oil filter & switched over to briggs synthetic oil, new spark plug (#5066 platinum, same as came out) and even used that pb blast mower tune-up spray to help cyl. seal, new belts (all 4) new blades, replaced all the worn steering parts, pullies & bearings, welded up holes in deck, sanded, and painted it up like brand new, heck i even waxed it! I'm starting to think I wasted my time & money just to show my dad that "the old cub, could be just as good as the new one" I have noticed it runs longer before cutting off when not enguaging blades though. i thought maybe its not charging the battery enough? my multimeter sals when running: 12.87v? I don't know I'm lost ...and frustrated...and my grass is getting taller! Can you help me????
From what you describe, it sounds like perhaps your magneto is breaking down when it gets hot. To test it, you will need an inline spark tester and as soon as it dies, try to restart it with the tester in place and see if you have spark. If not, replace your magneto.
When testing your battery with the multimeter are you running it at full RPMs? It should actually be putting out about 13.5 to 14 volts at full RPMs to keep the battery charged up good especially if it has an electric blade clutch.
FYI you can go to http://manuals.mtdproducts.com and with your full model and serial number you can download some excellent information including a complete service manual. They have 9 different manual you can download and should be of great help with your tractor
