Question about Electric Lawn Mower

1 Answer

I have a problem with a Black and Decker electric lawn mower model MM525. While cutting some high grass today, the mower slowed down, then quit and would not restart. I checked the electrical outlet and there was no power--the fuse was burned out in the switch box. I replaced it, tried again, and again it would not start or even give any response at all, but again it blew out the fuse in the box. The fuse is 25A and the mower is only 12A so that's not an issue, besides, I've used this mower from that outlet for about 4 years since I first got the mower and never had any problem before. My question is: is whatever is causing the mower not to start and to blow out my fuse something that can be repaired or should be? Thanks.

Hello blumph,

I can think of only one or two things that are causing your problems. It could either be approx. a $14.00 switch in the handle that has shorted out, or 2 bad brushes $1.75/ea.on the armature (motor). Both are fairly simple fixes with just a screwdriver and maybe pliers. You might also check and see if the power cord has been chafed or damaged and is shorting out.

Mower is electric. cord is fine. was mowing great, had it on highest blade level due to high grass. just quit completely. blade and chute are not clogged. there is power to mower.

If you were cutting long grass it sounds like you may have burnt the motor out. It may have over heated. they are not made to cut long grass. You don't say whether the motor runs but not the blades if this is the case you may have sheared the shear pin in the blade assembly.

Why does my electric mower lose power in high grass? After waiting a few seconds &/or tilting it up, the engine revs back up and can continue to cut. It is a older model. Doesn't have a fan attacted to...

The high grass causes more drag than shorter grass. This means more friction. The tilting lessens the drag, so less friction, the speed increases. It ma need a sharpening but it sounds as though it is running correctly. As you say, it is older so you can't expect new performance. Good luck...Lee

I would like to buy a petrol lawn mower, i have found out there are mulching lawn mowers on the market, what are your views on this type of mower

Mulching mowers are great if you dont have the time to rake the excess grass or the means ( time or ability) to dispose of te collected remains. The mower will mulch te grass right back over te top of the cut grass with minimal apperance of grass being left behind, if you kep up on the cutting schedule that is. Better for larger areas where "lines" would usually remaine with a non mulching mower.

Mower won't start

13 to 15 amps electric or battery operated mower may runs slow when cutting thick grass. also recommended not to cut grass when it's wet & need very sharp blade to do the lawn. may overloading it, cutting grass too thick also draws too much power. check house breaker first.

Most lawn mower mfgs offer a mulching kit which usually consists of a metal plate to block the discharge opening and a mulching blade which just has a longer sharpenned cutting edge.
With a little labor you can make your own.
