It's probably in hibernate mode. go to your display properties ->screen saver, click the power tab and check the hibernate tab, try disabling hibernate.
Sometimes, if a machine won't properly wake from sleep, there may be a bug in the BIOS, you can try updating to the latest BIOS for your machine. Check the manufacturer's website to see if an update is available.
