By the chip part, are you referring to the controller board. this is the printed circuit board the sends low level commands to the servo motor and the read write heads. as well, the issues will mean that the board has failed and you cannot get the drive to spin up at all, you will have to replace the controller with a donor drive., or you will have to actualy take the controller board off the drive and swap a good drive controller board for the bad one. to get the data off it again. possibly sacrificing the good drive to fix the bad one. make sure the same number of lba logical block addressing matches the chs # and the model number match as well. the drive should be identical and around same exact year. this will not always work, but you might get lucky. if not prepare for a 174 to 400 dollar recovery cost with a company like Rapid Data Recovery rapid-data-recovery.com they are a great recovery unit and helped mea few times. good luck with it. Please remember always have a backup drive eaven a usb external one touch backup is better then nothing and saves you thousands of dollars and your busniess eaven good luck and thanks for using fixya

I broke the mini usb port on my external hd can it be repaired..

Hi Kathleen,
Depending on the extent of the damage it may be possible for your local PC store technician to repair the USB connector.
Take the drive to your local PC store and enquire about a repair and what the cost would be.
At the same time you can ask them what it will cost for a new external USB hard drive case. They can easily remove your hard drive from the damaged case and install it into a new case. This will most likely be cheaper than having the old one repaired, as a new case should only set you back $10 or $20.
Best wishes,

FixYa does not sell any components.
Your best bet is to Google the Internet for 2 Tb hard drives and you can get price comparison between suppliers.

Hello
I think you'd be better of with buying a external box to put the drive into it . You need to cautiously break the original box open and proceed with the transfer .

My external hard drive fell off my desk and since it has been beeping and not operating correctly

You broke it. Does the Acomdata warranty cover self-inflicted damage?
Did you buy it with a credit-card that adds "all-perils" insurance?

All you can do is to disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk-drive,
buy a similar, compatible, disk-drive, install it into the enclosure,
and thus "revive" your external storage device.

BROKEN PLUG?

You can buy another external housing and then just swap the hard drive itself over to the new housing. The housing only cost in the 30 buck range if not cheaper. If you need to get the data off, you can also buy an EIDE/SATA to USB adapter that will allow the connection between an unhoused hard drive and a computer. CompUSA sells them for around 20-25 bucks.

Usb input from hard drive to computer is broken

Will replacing the data-cable replace the broken-off piece?

If not, then for about $30, you can buy a new "empty" external case, and then "transplant" your current disk-space into the new case.
Take your current external drive to the computer-store, so that the new case that you buy will be the correct case for your existing disk-drive.

Of course, because you have a "small" (100GB) disk-drive, any warranty for the disk-drive probably has expired, and it would be good "preventative-maintenance" to buy a new external disk-drive, before your current disk-drive unexpectedly "quits" on you.

Aspire Notebook 5735-4774 won't display on external CRT monitor

If the video chip on the Aspire motherboard is OK then the image on the external monitor would be OK. If not then the video/motherboard is faulty.
To gain access to data on the hard disk, remove the hard disk and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. The computer will see this as an external hard drive.
Alternately -
You can put the hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

The port where I plug the cable coming from the computer to the external hard drive broke off the circuit board in the external hard drive. Can I fix it or get a repacement circuit board? Thanks

Your best bet would be to by a replacement enclosure. Online retailers like newegg.com can sell you one. Find out if your hard disk is SATA or IDE. You can then buy an appropriate external enclosure and move the hard drive inside your WD encloseure into the new one.
