Try to delete your cd rom drive in the device manager and then let your pc automatically detect and install the compatible driver and then try to check if it still not reading the disk i think your cdrom drive is defective.

> I think something may be wrong with my optical drive

I agree. It may just be the physical sensors -- it's trying to detect that the inserted media is "fully" inserted, and spits it out if it determines that there is a "jam" that is partially blocking the detection.

Or, it may be the laser not working, and not reading anything from the media, and deciding to "eject" what it thinks is "invalid" media.

When i insert a cd or dvd into mu MAC powerbook

Check to see if your discs are dirty. Clean them and try again. Also, check to see if you got heavy scratches on the discs. Also, click on the blue apple logo at the top of the screen, then click on about this mac, then click on more info. Under the hardware click on the disc burning title. Look at CD write and DVD write info to see what the burner will play. If no info is there, then your optical drive is disconnected from the logic board or your optical drive is toast. If your optical drive spits out every single disc, then that also means it needs to be replaced.

Cd Drive in Mac iBook 4 is malfunctioning. Disc will not mount.

Shut the machine down. Find the original CD or a retail OS X installation DVD. Start the machine up and immediately hold down the option key. You will see a icon of your hard drive. Now insert the CD or DVD. If it immediately spits out, your optical drive needs replacement. If it does not, click on the U-shaped arrow button to rescan the drives. If the CD/DVD does not show up, your optical drive needs replacement. If it does, choose it and boot from it. If this actually works, you may have a software problem -- this is low probability, but possible.
Keep in mind that the CD and DVD read heads are separate. If one of those is malfunctioning, your drive will accept CDs but not DVDs, or vice versa. If you see this behavior, your optical drive needs replacement.

Dell XPS 1300 Cd rom problem

This is a CD drive mechanical problem. All CD/DVD drives have built in error checking for mechanical failures. When you insert the CD/DVD, it tries to grab and seat the disc, then attempts to spin it up and then read it. If the grab and seat function fails for any reason, the drive will eject the tray so you can try again. You should contact Dell support and get the drive replaced. Has the drive ever worked? or did it just stop working one day?
