Is there any error messages appear when you insert the SIM card?.
Try to clean the metal surface of Sim card with a piece of clean cloth and try it again
Try to insert the Sim card using different phone ( If it works. The problem is the phone)
If you can use the simcard using different phone then the sony erickson you are using is locked up to a particular network. so all you have to do is to call your service provider hotline to request for unlocking of the phone.

A VERY HELPFUL RATING IS APPRECIATED,
Have you tried cleaning your sim by rubbibg it gently with a dry cloth, or adding a small piece of paper to help press down your sim card? If not then try them. The sim or sim reader may have oxidised. this is solved by cleaning. If the piece of paper works, then the sim reader pins have sank. they need to be lifted up gently or replace the whole reader as as one of the pins may be broken
most of these new cell phones are looking for a new and updated sim card....call your carrier and tell the rep that your cell is not reading sim no more...the rep will tried to force the issue from their end / they will probally tell you take sim out and read the 16 little characters on it.....still not working....they will tell u that u need a new sim card (shhh) hopefully this is nice rep that will tell u that can get one for free....if u go to the store they tell to.... so be nice (all in all ive told family and friends this and everyone has had gotten free sim, for dash cect and blackberrys)
It sounds like you dont have the sim card inserted properly. slot to the meatl chip is facing up and all the wy down touching the circuit board. sim 1 slot metal chip is facing down and elevated the width of a sim card off the circuit board. If that doesnt work...
1.) Shut down the phone, remove the SIMS, and replace them back in the slots in the correct manner again. It may just be that the SIMS aren't in correctly, not pushed far enough into the slot, or their metal grid isn't making good contact with the SIM's slot pins. Try to wedge a tiny piece of paper, placed against the side of the SIM without the metal contacts, between the phone and the SIM so it makes the SIM's metal contact points fit up against the phone's SIM slot contacts a little more snugly. 2.) Try just switching the SIM(s) to a different slot in the i9 and test again. 3.) Try the SIM(s) in another phone if you can. Though not happening too often, SIMs can go bad, sometimes working erratically, and can actually be the cause of many odd issues which can be very hard to diagnose the SIM as the true cause. 4.) Take the SIM out and clean the metal contacts on the back using an ordinary pencil eraser. 5.) Try to get yet a second or third SIM to try in the phone. The more the merrier ... well not really but you never know, the more SIMs you try the more reliable the testing.
All mobiles have a sim card and are normally located under the battery.
Take the back of your phone, remove the battery and it should be there. Sim cards are normally a small oblong piece of plastic with a corner cut off. The flip side of one will have a metal strip, which is your sim memory. Don't damamge this side of the sim otherwise your card will be useless.
