I have a 1/2 horsepower electric motor 230 volt 3 speed w/ capacitor HVAC fan assembly. how do I wire it to power by color coded wires?

Keeping in mind that some motors may be different
The most common wire colors on a 3 speed motor are as follows:
Red- Low speed
Blue- Medium speed
Black- High speed
Brown capacitor wires ( usually two of them connect to the two capacitor terminals doesn't matter which wire to which terminal)
White - Neutral wire on 115 volt systems or the other 115 volt side of a 230 volt system ( note on a 230 volt motor this wire may not be white). Remember this is the most common wiring but different motors may have different wiring.
Hope this helps.

My roper dryer had a 4 prong cord. i changed it over to 3 prong. now it will not start

Your dryer requires 120 for motor operation. It only needs 240 volts for heater operation. Since the motor is 120 volts it is on a different circuit than that of the heat. On your terminal block is a white wire in the middle, that is neutral and it is needed to drive the motor. On either side is a black wire and a red wire. The motor runs on the white and black circuit. The heater circuit runs on red and black.
The motor circuit has a fuse in it mounted on the blower wheel next to the control klixon. If it is open the motor will not operate just as the door was open, door switch is also on the motor circuit. The motor has to be operating for the heat to come on also because the heater wires go through the motors centrifugal switch.

yes white and black are both line voltage in.each wire will have 110 to 120 volts. Attach one wire to top of starter contactor left side the other to top of starter contactor right side. Attach green wire to ground.

My pool originally had a 2 speed AO Smith pump motor. Several years back it was replaced with an AO Smith single speed motor. I am replacing that motor with a new AO Smith single speed Centurion Switchless...

Is it going to run on 230V then? If so you would normally use red and black. The white wire should be a neutral and the ground wire is obviously ground.

Do you have a meter you can use to confirm the voltage between the wires? If you do you'll want to start with red and white since you seem to think black was not being used before. If the voltage reads 230 and the motor is set up for 230 then attach one wire to L1 and the other to L2...it will not matter which is connected where as long as one is on each terminal. Insulate the black and ground the ground lead to the motor ground screw.

If the voltage is not 230 between those two check between red and black. If that is the 230 then insulate white and put red and black to L1 and L2.

Generator electrical

On a 230 volt std hook up here's the way it is supposed to work. From black to white you should get 115 volts. From Red to white you shoudl get 115 volts. From red to black you should get 230 volts.

Concentrate on getting the correct output from the generator with the load to the house disconnected

This should be 115v (black to white, 115 volts red to white and 230 volts red to black.

On the load side (ie, the house connected) what are you using? 115 volt lights, etc on one side of the
230 volts, and some other 115 volt loads on the other side.. Are there any 230 volt loads. It could be
that one side of the 230 volts (ie, a 115 volt side is drawing a lot more current than the 2nd 115 volt leg.

Get back with me on just what the loads are botth 115 volt and 230 volt . also what are the rating on the circuit breakers.
