Question about Kirby Heritage II Vacuum

1 Answer

My Kirby 2HD has started making an odd roaring noise but still works fine. I have taken the front assembly off and cleaned and adjusted the roller and checked the belt. The noise seems to come from the motor housing. I have tried to wiggle the main shaft at the front (bearings?) and it seems tight. Can't seem to get the other housings apart. Any ideas? Thanks, John

Using a flashlight, slowly rotate the impeller by hand and inspect for damage (broken fins, cracks, etc.) This usually causes a different sound when the motor is running.

It is quite possible, it just needs lubed. The motor comes in direct contact with dirt so, you have to make sure the front bearing has a drop of oil on it from time to time. If it starts to scream at you within one month, after oiling, the bearing needs to be replaced.

Testimonial: "I will try that upon reassembly. In the meantime, I discovered a blade broken off the impeller which is probably the culprit but thanks for your idea."

Since you have a broken impellor, it will need to be replaced. Being unbalanced will burn out the bearing directly behind it.

Runs but doesn't vacuum/****. Sidebrush works fine. Cleaned the roller brushes, and that seemed to confuse the robot and now it keeps going backward a few inches, turning, and then starts going backward...

sounds like a sensor problem. pull and clean the front black/white caster assembly and the revealed movement sensor and the 4 cliff sensors along the bottom of the front. Make sure the front caster wheel turns freely. You may have to remove the roller from the caster assemply and push the axle out and clean it.

Just got done fixing our Heritage II model 2HD, it had a dirty safety switch. Both the hose attachment and the roller housing depress a plunger to close the switch, thus sending AC to the motor brushes. You might want to try pushing this in and out repeatedly with your thumb, power removed of course, in an attempt to make better contact. If this works to restore power to the motor, it'll be just a short time before the problem repeats itself. You'll have to remove the switch to give it a thorough cleaning. I didn't have any contact cleaner handy, so I wound up using WD40. Hope this helps. Kevin H.
