Your door switch is stuck in the closed position
replace that and you should be ok
as far as closing it may be the switch stopping the door too

Testimonial: "Thanks, that was the problem. So easy. I appreciate it. "

Why does dryer spin with door open?

Hi Mandy,

The fact that the light bulb is out *and* the drum continues to spin when the door is opened - all point to a faulty door switch.

This switch tells the machine the "status" of the door position. When the door is open, it turns on the light *and* stops / prevents the drum from starting. When closed, the light is shut off *and* the drum is permitted to spin. You should have the switch serviced as if a wire came loose it adds a potential shock hazard - in addition to the safety issue of placing hands into a spinning drum.

Dryer light bulb burned out

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you
Light Socket

The light socket can get corroded or a wire connection can come loose. You will need to remove the front panel to access the housing on most dryers.

Door Switch

If your dryer has an interior light, it probably uses a standard 40-watt appliance bulb, but check your owner's manual to be sure. If the bulb is good but the light won't come on, check the door switch, which serves two functions: When the door is closed, it turns off the light and allows the dryer to start. When the door is open, it turns on the light and prevents the dryer from starting. To check the door switch check for continuity. You should have some when the door is closed and none when the door is opened. If not replace the door switch by removing the front panel.

It blows fuses or trips the circuit breaker

Electric dryers use 220 volts or two power lines of 110 volts each. Some components in the dryer need only 110 volts; the heating element requires 220 volts. So it's possible for one part of the dryer to be fine and another part to have a short circuit. Short circuits can be caused by the heating element, the main power cord, or any other part of the internal wiring. Loose connections on the power cord cause failures and or fires. This can be checked with the dryer unplugged and removing the service cover and visually check for burning and mechanically check for tightness.

If the circuit breaker trips or the fuse blows when the dryer is unplugged, it's likely the problem is with the house wiring, fuse box, or circuit box. Contact a qualified electrician.

Dryer won't heat up and light bulb turns on then off when door is opened.

Does the drum spin when you shut the door and start the dryer if so it wouldn't be a bad door switch. 1st. thing I would check would be the igniter with front kick panel off dryer it's located at the bottom right hand outer side of drum in the burner duct. here's how you check it with door shut start dryer and look for a orange glow from the igniter if no glow it's a bad igniter if it's not the igniter it could be a thermostat or a flame switch check these things if need more help I'll be glad to help.

I have a 2 year old Kenmore HE3 electric Dryer. Model 110.8708. The drum light never worked. I opened up the door and found a broken bulb. I replaced the bulb. the light stays on all the time,...

the door switch has something wrong with it,it's keeping the bulb on all the time and that's why it burnt out the first time, also you're missing the last four numbers on the model number

Maytag dryer (Model# MED5700TQ0) will not start. Light inside works, but the tumbler won't turn. the door is completely shut.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Open the door and grab one of the baffles. Check to see if there is major resistance when you try to rotate the drum. No major resistance = a broken drive belt

A broken drive belt will also trip the belt safety switch by the motor and will not allow the motor to start.

The drive belt is item 26 here:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5161471

Please check the door switch for a click when you just open or close the door. Within about 1 inch of closed usually you will hear an audible click. You said the light works so I doubt the door switch is the problem... (it still can be the problem though) 1/2 of the switch is for light control the other half for drying control.

The other suspects can be
1. The start switch
2. Timer control
3. Motor control switch

ONE more thing to check is go to the main circuit breaker panel and physically push the dryer CB to OFF then back on. After doing this try to start the dryer. Sometimes ONE of the 2 CB's trips for unknown reasons.

Finally if the dryer vent system was restricted and the the dryer got very hot (309 Deg) the thermal fuse on the side of the internal rear duct housing will also shut off the dryer and it will not start.

Item 9 this link:

Before you return the dryer to service... vacuum everything including all ducting internal and external to the dryer. Do not forget the thru the wall vent flapper where it exits the outside wall.

Thanks for using FixYa

Sears 1/2 horsepower garage door opener, both lights do not work. Changed bulbs, checked bulbs, both are good.

Unplug the unit and remove the light bulbs. Using a small screwdriver pull out on the center contact in the light socket.

POSSIBLY BAD DOOR SWITCH OR AT LEAST THE PART OF IT THAT TURNS LIGHT ON AND OFF. IT SHOULD BE A 3 BLADE SWITCH 1 ON ONE END AND 2 ON OTHER OR YOU HAVE NOT SCREWED BULB IN FAR ENOUGH. i HAD TO CHANGE MY BULB TOO WHEN NEW ONE INSTALLED I DIDN'T TURN IT FAR ENOUGH IT WAS STIFF GETTING IT IN.

Hello jmylymok,
Welcome to Fizya,

You said, you replaced burned out dryer bulb on Whirlpool GEW9250PW and now drum light won't shut off even with door closed. Dryer will not work but all panel lights function normally - UNTIL you press start. Dryer just beeps and doesn't work. When I tried the troubleshooting solutions, the error 6E comes up. What does this mean?

This sounds like the reason your bulb went out was more than just a bulb normally dying!
There is a short, or in that socked or the switch or it affected the the control panel too!!
This sounds like a hands on diagnoses job!

Let me know how it goes.
