You might have to remove the tiny switch that is under the Right hinge. Your laptop thinks that the top is still closed. Just remove it and cut the two wires. Closing the lid won'd sleep the PC anymore, so be sure to hibernate before closing the lid.

Angie,

Try using Shift+Fn+Spacebar, to see if that reverses the situation.

I have hp pavilion dv7-4160em and i can't turn on backlights on my keybord. I would like to know if i have backlights or not

Try holding the Fn key and then pressing Spacebar. If that doesn't work, go into the BIOS after rebooting (press F10 when booting) and then try the same key combination there.
If neither of these work, either your keyboard is defective, or there isn't any backlighting available.
Hope that helps!

The buttons that have and fn option on them.. when i hit those buttons they fn comes up not the letter

It sounds like the fn key on the keyboard is stuct. The fn key is on lowest row of keys to the left of the spacebar. You may end up changing the keyboard.

Pavillion dv1000 back light does not work

Well, I believe the reason why it isn't working is because:
The backlight only works when your at the dark or at a low light condition.
If not press "fn" and press the backlight increaser on the top of the keyboard.

Hope this helps!!
