Question about Canon PowerShot S60 Digital Camera

Black screen, loud beeping when opened, doesn't work

My camera worked fine on Thursday morning (it's Saturday now) but last night, it was accidentally opened. No big deal, I thought, as I tried to shut the lens cover. But the lens wouldn't retract and when I turn the camera on (open the front cover), all my camera does is beep several times twice and the lens moves out and in and out a little bit. But it won't go back in at all if I try to close the cover and the camera shuts off. The LCD lights up with the canon logo and then is still lit up but black the entire time with "E18" in the bottom left corner. I tried recharging my battery, thinking it might just be SO dead the camera can't even shut off properly. That didn't help. It won't take any pictures, let me view the pictures, or anything.

Any suggestions?

Re: Black screen, loud beeping when opened, doesn't work

The following blog outlines some simple repair options for a lens error. But please first try the listed Fix #2. I heard that fix particularly works well for a camera who's battery had run down with the lens open. Please post back here with a follow up comment if any of the fixes work:

SOURCE: Lens won't retract

IF you are receiving an "E18" Error message all you have to do is make sure that there is nothing blocking the camera lens from coming out (or going back into) the camera. I had this problem and I had to do a little blowing on it, pushing it (carefully), but mess with it for awhile. If its caused by the same problem that I had that should fix it!

I own a CANON EOS REBEL T1i EOS 500D. I used it in perfect order last saturday, went to use it yesterday afternoon and i have nothing viewing on the LCD. The camera still takes photos fine. Just nothing...

hi there, have you pressed the DISP button (see red line above) or REVIEW button (blue line) yet??
if there`s still nothing appear on the LCD, i assume the LCD connector from the body is broken
you can claim it to be repaired to the store you bought it from, since the warranty still valid
hope this post will help

When I turn on my powershot A650IS last night the screen

If you've first tried the DISP button, AND also verified that your downloaded pictures are not also black like the screen, then it's probably just a loose flex cable connection. Please see this other post for info on how to correct the problem.

Display screen no longer works while taking pictures

Sounds like they accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of the camera. This manually turns the screen on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time with the camera turned on.

Cannon SD 750 - when i try to take a picture a black screen appe

Think that you accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Blank screen

Did you accidentally hit the lower left "Display" button on the back of your camera? It manually turns the screen on or off to save batteries. Turn the camera on and press it once to check.

Black pictures

Check your settings - could be if very black night, and you set it to 100 iso film speed, and maybe you are on say 1/1000 of sec at maybe f16, then that's ok. You would maybe need an explosion in an oil refinery to capture much.

However, you perhaps could try this:

1 change the battery for fresh one, and see if it helps - sometimes, the shutter won't really shut if battery power is very low

2. change the mode setting to auto, and see if the flash pops up and takes a pix - then if the pix is good, the camera is still working

3. Reset the camera to the factory defaults, by:

  • Firstly press the 'menu' button, then the up button above the 'OK' as many times as needed, until you see the top folders are highlighted.

  • Press the right button near the 'OK' until you see the last folder highlighted. You will know this is highlighted when you see the first menu option that says 'Language'. The 3rd one down from that says 'Clear Settings'.

  • Press the down button under the 'OK' until 'Clear Settings' is highlighted, then press the 'OK' button.

  • Scroll up to your choice and press 'OK' to reset your Canon 400D back to default factory settings.
If that fails, back to Canon! - good luck

Kodak md853

hi! my sister-in-law gave me a MD853 camera last week from Canada. I used it over the weekend when we went on a trip and the pictures and videos i took were great. Last night, my daughter took a picture of me and when she took a picture of her brother, there was only white on the a moving white sheet with colored edges. I thought she destroyed it or something. I tried to use it but now the screen is all black...last night only the video worked but this morning everything is black. The other programs in the camera works so i suspect the problem must be in the lens. I'm in the Philippines and if I send it back to Canada for repairs it would just take a long time and it will be expensive to send it back. What can I do? I really love this camera... help!!!
