The compressor motor has seized up and what you can hear is either the thermal overload switching off the motor when it realises that there is too much heat being generated by the stalled motor or the start relay trying to hit the start windings with a new voltage and failing to do so.

You can obtain a new compressor motor which will also mean a re-gas of the system

Totally a normal action.. When the compressor switches off once the temperature is reached, or possibly after a defrost cycle, if the gas hasn't quite equalised, it will click once or twice then start up.If the compressor has a starting capacitor and it does the clicking, then one needs to check the capacitor.

My freezer stopped functioning today. The light is on, there is a noise starting every now and then, there is a click and it stops. After a while the noise starts again. What should I do?

the noise you are hearing is probably the starting relay on the compressor failing and causing the overload protector to cut the power off to the compressor. Try replacing the overload and starting relay.

WHERE A PLASTIC PIECE PULLS IN THE COMPRESSOR MAKES A CLICKING SOUND LIKE GOING OFF AND ON, SOME TIMES IT MAKES A SPARK INSIDE THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR....

The freezer control will normally make a ticking noise when starting and stopping the compressor. If it is clicking on and off in abnormally short intervals, you could have a component failure that needs a technician's attention.

The overload on the compressor will also make a clicking noise when it trips. If this overload is tripping, the refrigerator and freezer will normally not be cooling properly. This lack of cooling may take several days to appear.

GE bottom freezer began making a clicking noise, will not run

The clicking could be the start relay. If the start relay is bad, the compressor will not start and you will hear a clicking noise in 2-5 minute intervals. The clicking noise is the overload cutting the compressor off when it overheats from trying to start with a bad start relay. To find out if this is bad first unplug the refrigerator. Remove the lower cover from your refrigerator. Then take the cover off that is on the side of the compressor, you will see wires going to this. Now you should be able to see the start relay plugged on to the side of the compressor and unplug it. Now the best way to tell if it’s bad is to shake it. If it rattles, it’s bad and needs to be replaced. If not, most of the time it’s ok. But rather than saying the compressors bad, you might want to replace it anyways because it don’t cost much in most cases (less than $25). If you replace it and it doesn’t work then the compressor is bad and you’ll need you call a repairman. (Note that compressors are very costly and are normally not worth fixing). Freezer stopped working.

It might be the compressor making the noise. If it is,the compressor will start/stop frequently. This means that it is tripping on overload due to mechanical damage.Only way to solve this prolem is to replace the compressor (if the freezer is still in a good condition).

This sounds like it's out of freon. Not just low but out. That clicking noise is a thermal overload shutting down the compressor. If you continue let it just click away it will burn this overload out and the compressor will have to be replaced. If the refrigerator just started doing this suddenly it could be that the compressor is locked up. If it has external capacitors either the start or run capacitor could be bad. If the capacitors are good then you could try a hard start kit to try to unlock the compressor.

Kenmore top freezer fridge does not cool but freezer works

Turned refrigerator off for 8 hours, let the frost melt and the fan in the freezer worked again. The compressor now only has a soft clunk when it goes off.

Noisy compressor

If it's a buzzing for a few seconds followed by a click, your probably going to need a compressor. This sounds like that problem. Check your warranty. Many manufacturers went to 1 year on this in '06.
