How back up your files (data) before doing system restore

1. Use of pre-installed backup tools. Many computers have a backup software installed when you buy (including Time Machine backup and restore for Mac or Windows). These tools are designed to transfer files to various media they create on the computer hard drive or external hard drive, you can prevent a total loss of data is performed. When you open the utility, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the backup.

2. Back up important files on a USB stick or Memory Stick. Insert the stick into a USB port on your computer. Drag the selected files to the disk icon on the desktop (Mac) or PC (Windows) will appear. Flash drives and memory sticks are very mobile and can be stored in small spaces such as basements. Although they generally do not have a capacity of more than a few gigabytes (GB), they are large enough to store your important files.

3. Enter an external hard drive. These external hard drives usually have a very large capacity and can therefore keep most or all files on a disk. Connect the external hard drive via a USB port. You can drag and drop files on your hard disk or use it as a means of backup using a backup utility installed.

4. Burn your important files on a CD-R or DVD-R. an entire hard disk backup can be many slices, so this option is ideal if you want large media files or documents for easy access later. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM and follow the instructions on the screen (for Windows and Mac) to back up and store files.

5. Upload files for storage in the cloud. Services in the Internet cloud storage (like Mozy and drop-down box) are great ways to backup files to the internet access from any Internet enabled device. Important files with sensitive information may only be attached to a back-up cloud services such as Mozy. Clouds, Drop box is ideal for backing up photos, videos and other files less sensitive.
Unistalled ext hd unsafely, now not being recognized.

It could be that the "table of contents" on the external disk-drive has been scrambled. Whatever you _do_ try, do _NOT_ try to run 'CHKDSK' (or "check disk") against the drive.

Instead, look online for "File Scavenger" software, which can read through the drive, sector by sector, and try to "stitch" together the pieces, in order to "recover" your files.

Maxtor external harddisk recognition problem by pc

Hi Maxtarm,

It sounds like either the drive or enclosure is failing rather quickly.

The first and cheaper solution is to take the drive to your local computer shop and have the techs there move the harddrive into a new enclosure and test it. If it works in the new enclosure, you're done, but please take my advise and never rely on a single copy of your files. Always keep your important files in 2 or more places, on your computers hard drive, external drive and a backup to CD's or DVD's you can store in a firesafe or friends home is a good idea.

Now assuming that change of enclosures doesn't work, you will need the help of a recovery pro to get your files back. If that is the case comment back here with your location (Country, state, city) and I will advise you on a reputable recovery provider in your location.

Hope this helps Fixya,

Chris

option 01. try the unit on another windows pc. if its the same. i am afraid you might have an issue with the device.

option 2 . you could remover the **** from the enclosure & fix it directly to the pc so that you can retrive the data. however this will have an impact on your warranty

Secured and compressed jpgs will not open

Hello patsyzara

(01) 1st, for now (as a precaution against data loss), please, don't add or delete anything to or from that external HDD (hard disk drive)

(02) Just to make sure, the photos and not just a catalog of the photos were originally stored onto the external HDD, yes?

(03) Do you still have access to the computer where you originally had the external HDD connected at the time you encrypted the files (photos)?

Even if the protected files were on the same external HDD that you are using now, the protection software is possibly associated w/ the computer on which the files were fist stored.

(04) Please, tell us exactly what mechanism (the name of the software, etc) you used to originally encrypt these files.

(05) Did you recall if you used software that came w/ the external HDD to encrypt your files?

(06) Please, tell us the the following:

(A) The operating system that was installed on the previous computer you're referring to. (Windows 2000, Windows XP, etc.)

(B) The model number of your Freecom external HDD. (look for a sticker or any markings on the case).

(C) The name of the encryption software if you can remember.

(06) If you still have access to the original computer, connect the external hard disk to that computer and tell us if you can see the files again.

(07) If you can, decrypt the files and then transfer the external HDD to the new computer.

If you need assistance w/ ANY of these steps or have any questions at all, comments, observations, etc., please, post back here w/ them. We will continue to work w/ you on this issue until it is resolved or we reach an impasse.

Thank you
BJ @:)

Data recovery from corrupt external hard drive

Well, in your case you should format the external drive and then try some so-called data recovery software.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem!
