Maxtor external hard drive failure

Hi there,

I have had a maxtor external hard drive for about 4 years, during which it has worked fine. About two weeks ago however, it stopped working, and no longer turns on. I've tried a different power supply at the same amp and voltage but it still won't turn on.

Is there any way I can at least get my files from it, even if it is not fixable?

Please help!

Thanks,

Patrick

It looks like my power supply is broken because I have a flashing blue light and smoke coming out. I am not if something is broken between the power going in and going to the harddisk or not.I opened the unit and remived the harddisk. The remainder of the unit works fine with a solid blue light. Do you think it would be a good idea to buy a new one and connect the new house to the old harddrive or would be the problem with the disk?

    hi there

I purchased a maxtor 3200 (external 500g hard drive). I have had no problems until today, When i tried to load up my hard drive and the computer did not find it, So i unplugged the hard drive and re-plugged it in and realised that it was making a humming noise and the fan is not working. Then my computer popped up an icon saying that it cant recognise the problem. So i was wondering if it can be fixed or can the data be recovered.

Please can you get back to me as soon as possible.

    Regards Martin

Put your ear down to it
if you hear it happily humming you have good luck

if its deathly-like with no sound or its starting and stopping and vibrating buzzing or beeping its most likely dead

If you really want those files, try DriveSavers.com. They do wonders with dead hard drives (known to have recovered files off a burned hard disk). But it comes with a hefty price. So check their website, http://www.drivesavers.com/.

Hi there i hav ea maxtor onetouch 4 mini 120 gb.

Remove the hard drive from the Maxtor case, purchase an USB hard drive adapter case, and install the hard drive inside this case. Then you can connect this to the computer's USB port and if the hard drive is OK then this computer will detect it as an external USB hard drive, then you can open the folders and files and back them up.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

I have a maxtor one touch4 and tryin to conect to my bell 6131 hd reciever if formats fine reboots but will not see the drive just tells me to go the bell.ca/pvrmax page wich is pretty useless

Comparing the list of requirements, the ONLY questionable one is the requirement that the external drive does NOT have a sleep mode...
The Maxtor MIGHT have that and not be compatibleas a result. ALL the other requirements seem to be met assuming you are using the external power adapter on the Maxtor..

Maxtor manager software shows no drives

Hi,

First and foremost if you're getting power but not seeing the drive you likely have either a drive or enclosure circuitry failure.

If you have no power lights try a new power adapter.

If the drive has failed and you want the data back you will need a Data Recovery Pro to asist you, if the enclosure has failed it will be much simpler.

Step one take the drive enclosure to a PC shop(no offence to Mac techs but they stink at salvage efforts, must be too many years of promising nothing ever fails ;)). When you get there ask them to remove the hard drive from your Maxtor enclosure and pop it into a generic enclosure(looks cheap but the internals are identical in most cases). Then ask them to test the drive to see if it shows up, depending on how you formatted it they may need MacDisk to make it visable.

If it works, buy the enclosure and head home, you're done. Plug it into your Mac and go on with your day, no harm no foul.

If this fails to see the drive, then the Hard Drive itself is likely at fault, in this case reply to me with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to the closest Data Recovery Facuility with Mac capabilities to have your data retrieved,

Of course if the only data on it is still accesible on the computer and it's a dead drive, just buy a new external, head home and rerun the backups manually as in this case it's cheaper to chuck and replace the external than have it recovered.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore

Hi,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

Hope this helps.
