What do I need to use the internet when I visit france on holiday/with my laptop.

Many hotels in Europe offer free WiFi connections and the hotels will provide you with the necessary sign-on information when you check in.

Your computer should automatically find the connection then all you have to do is sign on with the information the hotel provided.

In addition, many hotels also have business centers where free computers are available which provide instant access to the internet. In those cases I recommend using the hotel computer to protect information that you have on your laptop.

Hacking is a major problem in Europe and often hackers will have locked onto your computer within seconds after you have logged in...especially on public WiFi networks.

This can and does happen even on "secure" sites. You need to be aware of this and avoid accessing any websites where you have confidential information.

Once you return from France, I would suggest running an immediate full system anti-virus scan and I would change all of the passwords in all of the accounts I accessed while I was away.

What does a travel adapter do?

Travel adapters can be used on devices that are incompatible with the voltage levels of a household. Very often people use travel adapters when on holiday so they can use their electrical appliances in other countries.

The problem is I do not know about using wifi.I mean whats the use of a laptop if you can't transport it

You can transport a laptop and use it anywhere you want, but for reliable internet access when away from home then you will need to find public wifi. This comes in the form of either free public hotspots, such as at McDonalds and Starbucks, or secured wifi which is provided along with another service, such as at a hotel. In order to use any of these services, you need to have a wifi enabled laptop and the correct credentials to connect to the network. For free hotspots such as McDonalds, you don't need any other details other than to select the correct network from the list of available networks and connect. For hotel wifi and the like, you will most likely need a password or key to access the wifi, which is usually provided to you upon request.

Don't forget that laptops existed long before wifi, and that browsing the internet and reading emails isn't the only thing computers were built for!

I have dial up at home. I will be traveling and will need to go to wireless. I am not computer smart. I need step by step instructions on how to do this. I have a C655 laptop

Thank you for using FixYa

Apparently your computer has "wifi" compatablity. Which means that you can connect to a wifi hot spot, like in Starbucks and McDonalds, even most Hotels. That means you will have to stop and find one to connect to. Many have free access but security is always your responsibility. You will need to be within about 30-100 feet to get a reliable signal.

If you want on the go with mobile connectivity you will need to get a "wifi" modem like Verizon or ATT or Sprint provides. Expect to pay around $60 per month. You can get a card that fits in your slot or an external battery operated wifi modem that connects to the cell towers and rebroadcasts to your computer via the wifi 802.11.g/n. If you choose the wifi only you will need to go to your control panel and create a new connection in the wireless section on your computer. The computer should guide you through this procedure,

I hope this was useful and please comment if this was helpful to you.

How to connect to a wireless network wi-fi?

There are two sides to the WIFI connection. Your computer's adapter and "client" and the location's router and SSID.

Senario 1: You are in a hotel. The computer pops up and says there are wireless networks available. You click on the pop up and it shows a list of sometimes funny name WIFI networks. Let's say you are in a BestWestern Hotel and the list shows bestwestern in the list. You click on the name bestwestern. At this point you will be asked or told on screen that you have to enter a Security key. You call down to the front desk and get the login information. Once entered, you are connected to that WIFI network. In most hotels, you need to then start an Internet Browser screen and agree to use their network.
Senario 2: You are at a friend's house. You turn on your computer and it pops up there are wireless networks available. All of the names are odd sounding and none of them are familiar. One of those networks shows a very strong signal. This network is probably your friends SSID. You can verify this with your friend. At the same time find out what the security key is for the network. Then click on the network name, enter the key and you will have connectivity to the Internet.

Some networks have access lists, where you can connect to the WIFI, but, if your computer is not listed in the router at the location, youstill have no access. This will require the owner of the network to add you PC information to the router to give you access.

Can I print or scan to my computer without a usb printer cable

Not with a lot of effort since the printer is not a WiFi printer. I would check for a local repair shop in the city you're traveling in/to and call them to see if they will sell you a used USB cable (6 foot). It should be pretty cheap.

Laptop (HP) has wireless setting... but I want to go on the road with it and use the internet while traveling in my motor home or auto. How do I do this. What equipment do I need? It is connection to my...

There is a couple of different ways to do this. 1- you can use the built in wireless in the computer at places that have free wifi ie... McDonald's, Wendy's, BurgerKing, Coffee shops, Malls, hotels, etc... most of these have free wifi. The plus side is it's free, the downside is you are restricted to finding a place with wifi. 2- you can go through your cell phone provider and purchase an air time PC card. With this card you can go on line anywhere anytime as long as you have a signal, same as your cell. I know that just about every hotel/motel out there has free wifi now, and my folks like to travel alot in their motor home, and they told me that they see more and more camp grounds with wifi.
