I had a similar issue, Tried the pcmcia and was able to get it to work but had to unplug the card prior to reboot and then plug it back in to get it to work again. As mentioned in one of the other posts, the fan was very durty on the inside next to the heatsink, cleaned. Ran fine for awhile, but it happened again. I installed XP Pro on the pc and it has run fine for the last few months, no problems. With this said, it would still have to be a hardware problem since the pc keyboard would not work in cmos. believe the fan holds the key.

Identical problem:
Rebooted machine gets to Windows log on prompt, but keyboard, trackpad etc are locked / frozen.
No apparent cause or fault.
Possible solution:
Try shutting down again (press and hold power button), then remove the battery, ensure you are plugged into the mains, now restart. It fixed my problem. (But battery is still an issue).

Try booting your computer from CD ROM with the OS CD/DVD already inserted and when prompted just try repair. If that does not work re-install the same on the same 'partition' assuming it to be C by deleting the the windows system files only. While doing so keep the internet on and immediately after the basic version of the OS is installed and the m/c boots-up for the first time, go to the official website and download the latest drivers for every component like toch-pad, keypad, display, audio, etc.(i.e. almost all the drivers)

Try to remove ram memory and put it back after a while. Do it on removed battery.

I can't install anything because nothing works. I changed the hard drive and the same thing. Boots to windows and nothing works. No usb, no cd, no mouse, no keyboard, no external monitor and now the screen only comes on about every third boot. I don't think it is the keyboard since everything else is not working.
it was the battery
I have the same problem, with my Aspire 5100. the other day I was downloading the latest I-Tunes, IPod up date and after the update and reboot, the keyboard, touch pad or USB and DVD wouldn't work. I have try-ed every thing.I have always had problems with this machine freezing-up, but never this problem. have done every thing short of pulling the mother board. I can't try any any software update because I can't log on.
The very same thing happened to my aspire 5100 just a few days ago and I have no clue how to fix it. I am not sure if it is the battery or something else. I get to the log in screen but nothing works. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thanks.
acer Aspire 3100 exactly the same problem. the Laptop seems to work fine. It boots up all startup programs are launched. The meeting and other Alarms and schduled alerts works perfectly. No Keyboard or mouse or usb poart. Even external USB mouse or USB Keyboard do not respond. Seems like something at the BIOS level as cannot boot from a CD/DVD. Cannot break windows regular boot or BIOS setup. Very very strange.
I had two problems with the Acer so I thought. The first problem was the battery. I took it out and everything worked. Put it back and nothing worked, so I left it out and I was fine for a few days. Then the same thing started with the battery out of the laptop. I ended up sending it in to Acer to replace the motherboard (still under the warranty) It works like a dream now, no more problems. So it was just the motherboard.
Hi,
The usual usual - Acer Aspire 5100 freezes then after reboot no input devices or usb BUT using a pc card I got the external ones working ... until I rebooted :-( Lots of googling and trying thangs but no dice.
However, as its JUST out of warranty and I use it for work and I actually have 4 of the little beggers and they've been real good until now apart from some loose keys, I looked inside and discovered blocked fan ducts - they look fine from outside and the fan sounds the same but inside its all crudded up.
While inside I also refixed the ram and wifi card.
Reassembled....no change! aahhh!
Tried the PC Card thing again, no go either. aaahhh!
After finding a rope long enough to hang myself I happened to nudge the mouse and ... it moved!
Now I'm checking everything I can and I'll report back anything I find or if it was just a brief respite before its death knoll.
I suspect that a blocked fan is heating up the insides and the USB or glue chips are cooking but the processor somehow keeps on going. Once the fan is cleared and gets to work everything cools down et voila. It could also be a little thermal fuse resetting but I haven't dug deep enough to find any small ones, just the big one by the power in.
(I read of some people finding that the computer DOES lock up but clears after a few reboots etc. May be the fan is reversed during boot as a purge function?)
Oh, I also measured the motherboard cell and it was A ok, so its no that, and tried another power supply.
Kind regards from sunny Eastbourne.
laptop boots to the operating system but keyboard and touch pad doesn't functions
no mouse
Locks up no mouse or Keyboard,
Have run system restore no luck,
my acer aspire 5100 on screen display will not show after i press one of the buttons on the frount of the laptop please help?
man is it me or these acer aspire laptops are garbage ?
I have an acer aspire 5102wlmi and a few weeks ago after the warranty period ended the keyboard / usb and touchpad are dead.
got a screwdriver and took a look inside ... and the conclusion is you get what you pay for
Same thing, no kb, no mouse, no usb, but seems to be going into windows xp normally, just havo no ways to interact with my acer 5100 laptop. If I try to install a new Windows, the system asks to 'press any key to boot from cd', so no chance. I can't use usb mouse or kb, so no luck. If I try to press f8 for safe mode, no kb, If I boot in the middle of the start up sequence, to force safe mode, it just goes into windows as well. Gonna try a wireless kb, but since it is a usb device, probably won't work. I am going into the screwdriver phase. Oh, it is really dusty around here, that fan idea may be the key... good luck to us..
