Question about Mtd Yard - Man 160cc, 21" Self - Propelled Lawn Mower

1 Answer

I think this is the right model as a cross reference to a Scott's 6.5 HP self propelled mower. I replaced the oil, new plug, ran cleaner and starter fluid through it. It cranked right up, but surges high rev - low rev - high rev - low rev, on and on. I removed the round cover from underneath the carb and cleaned it out, but that didn't seem to do the trick. I removed it again and now it leaks too bad top even start. Do I need a new 'O' ring and other parts to get this solved? Please advise. Very Best Regards, B. Forbes

Mr. Forbes, the round cover beneath the carb is the float bowl and you most likely put the seal on incorrectly seal when you replaced it. One of the worst things to do for a small engine is run starter fluid through it, these small engines either run or don't running starter fluid does not solve problems. You must find the problem through elimination process. Your problem though I think lies in the governor spring maybe somehow it got stretched or loosened up somehow along your process of tune up or repair or whatever you call it. If of course it is a constant rev hi low for a period of time. There is a rubber seal around the larger portion of the float bowl and usually a fiber gasket of some sort around the screw, you must have both in place to seal correctly. You also said you cleaned the round thing, was there anything inside of it when you cleaned it? This could also lead you to a solution.

I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.

Have a self-starting, self propelled toro lawn mower about 5 years old, I ran it out of gas by accident & now it won't start

It seems to be an obstruction in your fuel delivery system. Get a can of ether and a spray a short burst of it into the breather area near the carburetor, if the mower starts up and then stalls out, then you may need to get your carburetor serviced.

Toro Electric Start Problem

Remove spark plug and observe condition. Fouled with oil, bad motor. With plug removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD40 in spark plug hole, pull rope several times see if oil blows out. Spray a lot of starter fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug. Spray starter fluid in air cleaner area of carb, try to start. Replace spark plug, try to start. Ensure oil is full, all mowers have a low oil sensor now. 30w oil. Always use Stabile in gas.

Husband says thinks it is starter cable has stretched and needs new one...does this sound correct and how to install it on Troybilt self-propelled push mower?

I'd love to help you, but I think you need to rephrase your question. There is no "Starter Cable" on this mower. Sorry.

I evidently put too much oil in the Proulan Pro Lawn Mower. Now I cannot get it started. It sputters at first but will not start. I have cleaned off the spark plug with a paper towel and sand papered the...

First thing is to remove the excess oil. Take out as much as you need to to get to the line on the dipstick. Next, you may want to use a little WD-40 or similar cleaner to spray into the spark plug hole to thin the oil in there. Replace the spark plug and start the machine a number of times until it runs correctly. Using WD-40, remember the term "little". Good luck...Lee

Where is the oil change plug

The plug is under the mower on the bottom of the engine. Make sure you take the spark plug wire off before you work, remove the blade (it needs sharpening anyway right?) and then tilt the mower on its side WITH THE CARBURETOR UP. position an aluminum cake tin under the mower so that once you remove the oil plug using a 3/8" ratchet you can set the mower back down over the cake tin and it will catch the oil. Don't forget to put the plug back in =-)

I think that this is a 4stroke engine and runs on neat petrol.Have you been putting oil in with the petrol like a 2 stroke engine needs because this would account for the smoking. If not the check that you havn't overfilled the gearbox oil.

Toro self propelled 22 inch recycler lawn mower start pull cord is "stuck"

Casey,

My son just bought a new Toro self propelled 22" recycler and has had problems on two different occasions. The mower just bogs down to a stop and when he tried to pull the starter cord, it was very VERY difficult to pull. At first I thought the engine had seized up for some reason (no oil?), but we found the problem.

First, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug (to avoid the engine starting); tip the mower on its side and check very carefully the pulley and transmission belt. In his case, a piece of wood had gotten stuck between the belt and the pulley. Removing it fixed the problem (now he mows a little higher so as not to get so close to any debris). (We did have one further problem after that - the engine would not start - not even fire. After pulling and pulling, checking for gas, and checking that the air filter was cleean, we decided to check if the cylinder was flooded - we removed the spark plug, wiped and dried if off, and replaced it. It started right away.)

This belt 'n pulley arrangement isn't the best idea, if you ask me.

Good luck.
