Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Picture with white bands - firmware?

The camera has just started taking pics like this
Everything else works fine, viewfinder, LCD.

Video mode is still fine.

I suspect a firmware corruption but I can't upgrade as it already has which I think is the latest.

Does anybody know how to force a flash update - I want to override the "already updated" message the camera gives me when I try to update the flash.

Failing this is it possible to download the flash to the PC so I can compare it with the official

What to do?

Try a reset to factory default settings. If that doesn't work you can try to reinstall the camera's firmware as instructed on the Canon website.

When i take picture, the picture is white n some time become very very bright, but if take video is ok.

this can be usually associated with your white balance in still camera mode.
Check to see your white balance is set correctly or just set it to auto. Also make sure the mode you are in it set. (ie. indoor, outdoor, auto, speed)

Taking a picture, everything that is white is pink and dark pics

Oops, it looks like you have a couple of annoying problems with your Kodak camera.

Is your camera still in warranty by where you bought it (30 days) or the manufacturer (1 year)?

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Blank screen

Sounds like you accidentally pressed the DISP (Display) button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save battery power. You could then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn it back on, just the DISP button one more time.

Viewing is fine, taking pictures is not

This sounds like what started happening with my camera a few weeks ago. I found that turning the LCD screen off during picture-taking allows me to take pictures. I then have to go into review mode to look at the pictures I took using the LCD screen. Definitely not a great fix. I'm trying to locate a firmware upgrade that may solve it.

Distorted Viewfinder Only In PIcture Mode

Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.
