Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Picture with white bands - firmware?

The camera has just started taking pics like this
Everything else works fine, viewfinder, LCD.

Video mode is still fine.

I suspect a firmware corruption but I can't upgrade as it already has which I think is the latest.

Does anybody know how to force a flash update - I want to override the "already updated" message the camera gives me when I try to update the flash.

Failing this is it possible to download the flash to the PC so I can compare it with the official

I checked out the defective CCD links - looks promising.

The only worry is that the viewfinder/lcd works fine and video works fine.

If it's the ccd surely the bad image would show on the viewfinder...

It's interesting the blogspot link says "Another symptom may include purple scratchy lines showing up on the LCD monitor and the camera's pictures." This exactly describes the pictures but not what I see in the viewfinder.

Since I now live in the UK I'll give a service centre a call and see what they say.

I have this exact problem with my Canon S1 IS camera. I also thought of trying to update the firmware but the camera is already at 1.0.2 so it won't update it.

Video mode works fine, and even in the remote shooting mode the picture looks fine until you actually take a picture and the white/purple lines show up.

What to do?

Try a reset to factory default settings. If that doesn't work you can try to reinstall the camera's firmware as instructed on the Canon website.

When i take picture, the picture is white n some time become very very bright, but if take video is ok.

this can be usually associated with your white balance in still camera mode.
Check to see your white balance is set correctly or just set it to auto. Also make sure the mode you are in it set. (ie. indoor, outdoor, auto, speed)

Oops, it looks like you have a couple of annoying problems with your Kodak camera.

Is your camera still in warranty by where you bought it (30 days) or the manufacturer (1 year)?

Blank screen

Sounds like you accidentally pressed the DISP (Display) button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save battery power. You could then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn it back on, just the DISP button one more time.

Distorted Viewfinder Only In PIcture Mode

Yes, You are correct, it does not seem to be problem with the CCD. Insted it seems to be with shutter control or apparture control mechanism of the camera. Normaly there is one single cable carring signal to the shutter blade mechanism and the diaphram control. If this cable is damaged it shows the same symptoms as you have described in your mail. Get in touch with an expert camera repairer.
