Question about RCA HDLP50W151 50" Rear Projection HDTV

RCA HDLP50W151 keeps turning off

The RCA HDLP TV works with no problems then all at once the power light flashes 5 times and the picure goes black...a minute or two later the picture comes back on. I have tried re-seting the TV by unpluging, it works for a while then the problem comes back. 6 months ago I had to have the color wheel and lamp replaced.

I also have the power on and off issue. First, the TV
was bought in 04, and I had the bulb replaced in 06. For lamp problems, I
found out this was due to power outages. The lamp needs to cool down, and
with a sudden lose of power; it seriously degrades the lamp leading to eventual
failure. I bought a surge/battery back-up from RS for this issue,
40 bucks gives me 5 minutes of cool down or the ability to turn the TV off
    during a power loss.

Now recently, the TV all of a sudden powers down, and turns
off, with the power button on the TV blinking.
Reading trouble shooting in the user guide listed a few possible causes,
but the only thing I could attribute it to is a voltage issue. But with the surge protection I have, that
shouldn’t be an issue? I’m perplexed.

It was a voltage issue for me. I had major voltage fluctuations. I got a good a battery backup, voltage line regulator for about 200 bucks, problem solved.

I had a set with a similar issue--at first the tv would suddenly turn itself off, sit for a moment while flashing the power button, then "reset" itself and continue running.

Then one day it quit starting up all together. I couldn't get a picture at all. I was hoping it just needed a new lamp (which is what I was able to gather from reading various troubleshooting forums).

I took it to a repair shop for a definitive opinion, and when they took a look at the TV it actually started smoking and the issue was definately the light engine, not the lamp.  Unfortunately, a light engine repair costs around $950.  If you try to do it yourself, the part costs about $700, if it is in stock (and it turns out that it often is NOT in stock).

Instead of putting that much money into this TV, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get a new TV.  It just doesn't seem a good use of nearly a grand when new HDTVs can be had for around $1300.  Sorry for bad news.

If you can, try to replace the light first. You can get just the lamp for less than $200, although it may be a larger issue like mine.

That's usually caused by a bad lamp. However that chassis is famous for having bad caps on the power board. The repair kit is available at the following link and has repair instructions included.

I have a 2003 rca big screen, D495Cd05V serial #, HDLP50W151 model #, 4103067310297 lamp, 260962 part#, 50W151YX1 service number HDLP... the tv works an turns on but u cant really see the screen that great...

If the picture is dark you will need to replace the projection lamp. Make sure before replacing that the TV has been turned off for at least an hour as the lamp does get very hot. Just do a google search with the lamp part number of 260962 to find a decent price for it. Be careful as some will be just the bulb and not the complete assembly. I suggest replacing the complete assembly as replacing just the bulb requires gloves and being very careful handling the bulb assembly. There is an access door on the lower right side of the back of the TV where you can get to the lamp. Make sure the TV is unplugged and once you put the new lamp in make sure the door is placed back in correctly otherwise the set will fail to light the lamp. Good luck and I hope this helps : )

sounds like the DM3 isnt powering up the ballast to light the lamp or the ballast may be faulty. i would suggest trouble shooting the DM and ballast voltages.
