Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television
To correctly repair your tv all three CRT's (picture tubes) would need to be replaced as instructed by SONY service bulletins. Many years ago SONY wanted a better brighter picture and began making some CRT's differently and "better" . But saddley they did not do enough testing . After a few years they realised the mistake and they paid dearly for it. Unfortunatly enough time has passed that the $750.00 or more cost or repair can only come of the consumers pocket . They are good solid tv's when the CRT's get replaced with Panasonic picture tubes.
Sometimes screen control adjustments can be done to make the TV work for now but usually a flicker in color remains and it most likely wil get bad again
Hope this explains it for you.

I had the same problem with mine. After A LOT of research, I never found a good solution, except that strange things seem to happen when TVs get too hot. On my Sony, there is a solid panel behind the cloth-covered lower front panel. I removed the solid panel and drilled a series of holes in it to allow more air circulation around the projection tubes. This seems to have corrected the problem, at least for the time being.
