Question about RTO Bernzomatic Brushed Nickel Patio Heater

1 Answer

The pilot will light, but will not sustain itself, no matter how long I keep the knob pressed in. Can't get beyond this point. The therocouple output is only 5 mV, shouldn't it be much higher for the control valve to open?

How to relight pilot on boiler

Every boiler will have manufacturer lighting instructions on the unit, so be sure to read it thoroughly and turn off the gas for 5 min to make sure there is no gas build-up around the boiler. Some have electronic ignition and some require a manual lighting of the pilot. If the control knob has only ON-OFF, it has electronic ignition. Simply turn off the power (at the electric switch on the boiler or at the breaker box) and then turn it back on and it will relight itself when heat is needed) If it has ON-OFF-PILOT, you will have to light it manually. You will have to turn the gas valve knob so the arrow is pointing at the word "pilot" and depress the knob, while lighting the pilot with a lighter or match. Continue to hold the knob down after the pilot is lit for about 30-45 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up. If you release the pilot knob and the pilot stays lit, you can turn the knob to the "ON" position and the burner will light. Please be careful. if you are not sure what you are doing, call a professional.

How can we ignite the pilot switch

The directions are on the inside cover of the water heater as well as on the paperwork you received with the unit.
If you have none of these, get the make and model number of the unit and look it up on the internet.
General directions to light a gas appliance:
1.Turn the switch to, "Off"
2.Remove the 2 panels at the base of the unit.
3 Identify the pilot device.
4.Get a long lighter or match on a stick that reaches the pilot.
5.Turn the gas knob to the, "Pilot" position
6.Light the match and put it next to the pilot while pressing down the knob
7. Keep the knob pressed for about 45 seconds after the pilot lights
8. Let go of the knob so it's in the, "up" position
9. Turn the knob to the, "On" position
-the water heater should fire up in under a minute.
10. Put the metal panels back into position.

Pilot goes out

The pilot may no be strong enough to keep the thermocouple active . check to see that the pilot is engulfing the thermocoupler completely.
You may have to adjust the pilot for a stronger flame or you may have to clean the pilot orifice if it is dirty. Hope this helps.

What is a thermocouple and what does it look like

A thermocouple is a bi-metallic junction that when heated gives an small electric output. The tip of it sits where the pilot light is ( and it is a copper tube going to the gas valve) and the pilot light heats it up. It creates electricity after it heats up (which is why you have to hold the pilot light knob down when lighting) and opens the gas valve to keep pilot light lit after you let the pilot knob go back up. When it stays lit without having to hold it down, (make sure the thermostat is set low so it doesn't light the burner while you have your hand down there) then you turn the pilot knob to on. It should stay on and you can set the furnace to heat and raise the temperature where you want.

How to light a pilot

Turn the knob on the gas valve t the PILOT position. Press down on the knob so that gas can get to the pilot. Light the pilot. Keep holding down the knob till the thermocouple gets hot enough to hold the safety magnet open and keep the pilot burning. Then move the knob to the ON position. Once that is done raise your thermostat setting till the heater comes on then adjust according to you comfort and party on Amigo!

How to light the pilot

From looking at this parts list, I see that the gas valve is powered by a thermal generator. The generator holds open the gas valve AND operates the gas valve solenoid. Their are 2 thermostats one of which determines the desired cooking emt and another which is a limit that kills the operation if the oil exceeds 450 f. To light this puppy you move the gas valve selection knob to the PILOT position. Press in on the knob and light the pilot with a match. Keep holding down the knob till the flame stays on without the knob being pressed. Advance the knob to the ON position once you have the pilot lit. Most common problems for this rig: Bad thermal generator/thermopile. Weak thermal generator holds the safety pilot on till heat is called for then shuts down when the solenoid is energized. Bad solenoid operator on gas valve (non replaceable you must buy a new valve) Bad thermostat or limit. Pretty easy fix if you like getting greasy. LOL

We have a fairly new heater. went to turn on the pilot light and it won't ignite. what do you think is wrong? gas has been turned on before igniting

Sometimes it takes a few seconds for gas to reach the pilot. When you place the thermostat knob/gas control in the pilot position you must then depress it (push it down and hold it down). Wait a few seconds while holding it down, then press the ignitor button with your other hand while continuing to keep the thermostat knob depressed. You may have to hold the knob down and press the ignitor several times. You should see a spark at the pilot if the ignitor is working properly. Continue to hold the knob down for 30 seconds after the pilot lights, then release the knob, it will pop up & you can then rotate it to lo/med/hi and the heater will come on.,

Hand-wheel above the lighting knob springs back when i move it! Have I to light it first to be able to regulate? Ulf Manual?

Move that knob to PILOT and mash it down, then keep a holdin it down till it stays down on it's own after you done lit it. The copper/nickel alloy inside the thermocouple tip must get hot enough to produce electrical current and keep that sprang loaded electromagnet safety feature open. The whole idea is IF the pilot goes out the magnet will release (when the thermocouple cools down) and close off the flow of raw gas. Clever ain't it? Once you get the pilot to stay lit by itself when you let off the knob, then advance the knob to the ON position. The heater should come on unless you have a separate temp knob. If that is the case depending on how cold it is you would turn that temp knob up a hair.

How do you turn the pilot light back on? This is an older model, probably about 10 years old or so.

Move the gas valve knob to the PILOT position and press down on the knob. You will be pressing down on a spring loaded safety magnet. Now light the pilot and keep holding down the knob till the thermocouple gets hot enough to produce electrical current and hold that spring loaded magnet in. This is your safety device. If the heat gets too hot the furnace has a fuse in line with that magnet.
When the pilot stays lit by itself without you having to hold down the button then advance the knob to the ON position. Then go to the wall thermostat and turn on the heater.
