I have a 42 in magnavox lcd tv and it wont turn on at all and is also making a chirping sound coming from the back left of the tv. Picture just went out and gave a bad smell.

IF TV is a CRT, the high pitched sound is caused by a faulty power supply unit, or a faulty deflection circuit.
If TV is an LCD, the chirping sound is often caused by a blown electrolytic capacitor melting and leaking internal fluid. This happens often with PSU capacitors.
Whenever this happens, do not try turning on the TV, or you can cause more damage to the set.
The TV must be disassembled and tested , starting from power supply board. Often it is possible to spot the leaking capacitor at a glance, it will be burnt, bulged, and leaks are often visible. The repair must be done by a technician.
Call the support number printed on your owner manual, or locate a local repairman.
