SOURCE: bobbin rewind problems

Either the winder rubber is worn down one side, or the spindle has seized, take the top off and check and see if you can turn the winder by hand, if not then it has seized and the only way to free it is to put a couple of drops of WD40 on the spindle, put an electric drill on the end of the spindle and start the drill very slowly.

SOURCE: was given an old model Singer 237 Fashion Mate

If the bobbin is in the casing correctly then follow these steps...spin your wheel toward you until the threaded needle drops a thread around the bobbin casing it will slide down around the casing from center to the right and down. one the thread is just over half way around gentle pull the tail of your thread from the needle. It should move up and to the left collecting the thread from the bobbin casing. and a loop will arise below your presser foot (which should be up).pull that loop up until the tail of the bobbin is visable. Now you are ready to sew.

Both the power and light switch are on the light switch cover on the back of the machine. Although I have never seen your machine, I just went to the Singer Sewing machine website and downloaded your user's manual free--you can too, and I recommend it.

I have an old singer fashion mate my mother gave me years ago and it seems the bobbin holder will not stay in place any longer ???????

I don't know if you have the 237 or the 257 model but I think that they are very similar. You can download the manual for the 237 for free at www.singerco.com, under the customer support tab. Enter 237 in the box for instruction model #, Look at page 14 and you can see if you are doing it right, because it looks like it will snap in place once you put it in correctly. If, you are, you may have to replace some parts, hopefully not. But, they can be had a www.sewingpartsonline.com and other places. A hard ciopy for the 257 is $15 from Singer. Good luck
