I have fit a new hard drive and loaded microsoft windows on a fujisu laptop but I have a problem getting the ethernet drivers and sound drivers can you help

It sounds possible that your Windows XP install CD does not contain the necessary hard disk device drivers for the drive used in your Dell Vostro laptop and you would need to load these drivers separately during the XP install when the option is given to use third-party device drivers.

Some laptops may provide options in their BIOS settings to use a compatibility mode of operation for newer SATA hard drives that will make them visible to bootable utilities such as disk imaging software and older OS install CD's.

You should ideally have XP service pack 3 on your system. This should also solve the USB problem.
If you have internet on it you can get it direct from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com or you can download it on another pc, and burn it to CD.

Win 7 is asking if you have the sound drivers or video drivers or ethernet drivers.

To explain different,Win 7 is asking if you have a utility disc that came with your notebook.

I would choose the let windows find the drivers option and continue the install.

The sound is integrated onto the motherboard in this model, it isn't a separate card.

Here is the full list with the drivers for your Acer. Try unistalling any left over ethernet drivers and the install the new ones.

That is real easy, underneath the laptop you will see about where the drive would end, are some screws, simply remove these and the drive will slide out, it connects via, a plug & socket, this fits onto a standard drive, you simply need to get a suitable Hard Drive, either the same or bigger, any laptop drive will usually work, and refit the converter, if it uses one, and plug back in, replace screws. Then using a Windows Install DVD, st BIOS to "Boot" from CD/DVD and boot off the Install disc, and follow instructions, during the install you will partition, and Format to NTFS, and install the Operating System.. your back in business. First though you will need to download ALL drivers, Sound, Video, Ethernet, Touchpad and so on... from the manufacturers web site for your exact model & operating system.

When installing XP or Vista you get the option to load third party drivers for unknown devices. I think it's F6 just after the start of any version of Windows, once you press this you will have to supply the drivers for the Windows installation. This will make Windows recognise the hdd from then on.

If the laptop is newer than 2001, it won't have a ROMPAQ on the hard drive. That was compaq's system BIOS that had to be installed on the hard drive.

If you go into the system BIOS, make sure that the ethernet is enabled.

If it is, then load into Windows and check the device manager to make sure it is there. If it isn't, a simple fix is to do a system restore to the date it worked.

In windows XP, it's c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
In windows vista, it's c:\windows\system32\rstrui.exe

Assuming you don't have 2 drives installed in your laptop then you will need to get a windows system disk or install disk and boot up with this in the laptop to load windows whatever into your hard drive and set your laptop up to run on the new drive.
