How to light the water heater pliant light

If it's not electronic. Turn the dial to pilot and push in the pilot button and hold it, then put a flame to the end of the tube under the water heater, continue to hold until the thermocoupler warms up and release. If it goes out do it again only hold the button down longer. The turn the dial back to on..

The pilot will light but as soon as the button is released is goes out

1) If water heater has electronic gas control thermostat, then the gas control needs to be tested and possibly replaced. Add a comment and describe electronic gas control.

2) If water heater has non-electronic gas control thermostats, problem sounds like the thermocouple. Problem could also be bad gas control.
Make sure end of thermocouple sits in the pilot flame.

Buy thermocouple at local hardware. They vary by length, for example 18".
Thermocouple screws into bottom of gas control thermostat.
Finger tight plus 1/4 turn. No pipe joint compound or teflon tape on threads.

Heat from pilot flame travels to gas control thermostat.
Heat is changed into small electric current using a thermistor.
The small current tells gas control that pilot flame is ON, and so gas control keeps gas flowing.
If thermocouple is not working, or has fallen away from pilot flame, the gas control turns off gas to pilot.
This safety device is necessary so gas does not fill up house and cause explosion.

Reliance 606 natural gas water heater - model #640YORT - water does not stay hot. pilot has to be clicked to heat and then u can use hot water til tank empty and it will not continue to heat water.

If I understand correctly, the pilot light is not staying lit.
You light the pilot and water in the tank reaches temperature.
Once hot water is gone, then pilot light has to be lit again.

Gas pressure is good, and gas is flowing.
Thermostat is working at high end because it cuts off heating.
Vent is working because tank heats up.
Air intake is working.

Gas control thermostat might not be reading low temperature. Replace gas control valve.
Pilot tube might be dirty. Clean burner parts and combustion chamber, and air intake, and vent.
Backdraft might be blowing out pilot. Check for constant updraft by running water heater 5 minutes, and then light match under vent hood and see if smoke goes up.
Very hot air can put out pilot, especially when water heater located in attic. Add ventilation.
Improper vent might have water dripping back down into combustion chamber and putting out pilot light and rusting out the parts. Inspect for rusted parts and water.

Pilot hard to lite when lites stays on about 15 minutes goes out this is on reliance gas hot water heater 101

The thermocouple has gone bad or in this case is going bad to the point that it is useless.

The thermocouple is the pilot's, well, co-pilot! It is the electronic device that senses if the pilot flame is hot enough to ignite natural gas or propane fuel to the burner. If the thermocouple thinks it's safe, then it keeps open the main gas valve located in the pilot assembly. If the thermocouple does not sense enough heat from the pilot flame (such as when the pilot is out), then the thermocouple shuts off the gas valve to the burners.
How the Thermocouple Works
So what is this thing and how does it work? Well the thermocouple (technically called a thermocouple junction) is a device that contains two metal wires welded at the ends and placed inside a protective metal case. The thermocouple sensor is found at the business end of the pilot flame and is designed to be placed in the hottest part of the flame. The other end is connected to the pilot valve body. As the thermocouple heats up, it produces a small amount of electricity and when it gets hot enough from the pilot, send a signal to open the gas valve by using a solenoid operated by a 24 volt transformer. The thermocouple calls the shots, and by converting heat to an electrical signal, it allows the gas valve to open or close. Once the gas valve is open, gas is then constantly supplied to the pilot and as required for the gas burners (as called for by the thermostat). If the pilot goes out, then the thermocouple gets cold and produces no electric signal to open the gas valve's solenoid and the gas valve shuts off the gas supply to the pilot and burners. Neat huh?

I have a Rheem Power Vent propane water heater model3 21VP4OE-1P that is acting up. The pilot lights and then the burner lights, but goes off after 5 - 10 seconds. It cycles like this 2 or 3 times, then...

check the thermal coupling for the pilot light. if it goes out it will shut down gas supply, its a safety feature to put out pilot light if the thermal coupling is bad. to prevent gas from leaking and causeing a fire. check coupling.

It will work for few days then goes out. I reset the pilot light

Hi. Some of the whirlpool water heaters are notorious for having plugging problems on the air inlet screen. They are the air slots under the burner. Clean the slots with a brush and re-light. You may need to clean them regularly.
Hope this was helpful!
