Question about Garmin Nuvi 680 GPS Receiver

Garmin Nuvi 680 Touch Screen "touch" works intermittently

My Nuvi 680 will boot and load up correctly and the display works fine. My problem is that the touch function works sometimes but not all the time. If the screen boots and the touch works, it will always continue working until the unit is powered off.

However, sometimes the touch function will not work at all. Sometimes the touch function will start to work after a period of time with the unit on. Sometimes this period of time is just a matter of minutes, sometimes the period of time is hours. Sometimes the touch function will never work.

The 680 seems to go through cycles with the working/non-working touch function. Meaning that the touch function might work consistantly for several days, and then not work at all for several days.

There is no rhyme or reason to explain the working/non-working cycles. The unit stays in the windshield mount 100% of the time. It isn't moved at all - so I don't think it is related to moving, dropping, bad wiring, etc. It's just that sometimes the touch function works and sometimes it doesn't.

Any ideas?

It seems that this is a problem seen amoung other 680 users.

Recalibration has nothing to do with repairing this problem. If the touchscreen is non-responsive, how are you going to recalibrate it when it doesn't recognize the key presses?

The problem is caused by a defective touchscreen. SHARP substitued a different touchscreen into the 6xx series that fails even when the glass isn't damaged. The problem is caused by a defect in the manufacturing process where the touchscreen connections becomes detached from the tail that plugs into the board.

The touchscreen connections between the screen and the tail are made from conductive ink that can fracture, most likely caused when pressing on the screen over time.

These defective screens can be identified by a white tail cap at the end of the tail, whereas the original touchscreens have a maroon tail cap. The original touchscreens will only fail if the glass has been broken.

I only use the original touchscreens for all of my repairs.

Before contacting Garmin Support, try a recalibration of the screen:

To Recalibrate the Touchscreen:

  1. Power the unit On.
  2. From the Where to? and View map screen, touch Settings (wrench icon).
  3. Touch Display.
  4. Touch Recalibrate.
  5. A new screen will display that says Press Dot.
  6. Touch the Center of the Dot.
  7. Keep touching the center of the dot as it moves around the screen.
  8. When Calibration Complete appears on the screen, please touch OK.
The screen will now be Recalibrated.

If that doesn't work, it'll likely require servicing at Garmin. Contact Garmin Support for additional troubleshooting help and / or arranging for return for service below:

Hi,
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.

SOURCE: unlocking a garmin nuvi 680

Here's your options:

1. Enter the correct PIN.
2. Go to the secure location where the PIN was set and it won't ask you for a PIN.
3. Send the unit back to Garmin to be unlocked.

Sorry but there is no master reset. The PIN is written into memory that can not be erased. I have had success in unlocking Nuvi's but I will only do it for people who have a valid purchase receipt from a major retail chain and if they can provide me with their Garmin registration info so I can verify that they are the rightful owner.

There are too many of these units out there that are stolen and the culprits are looking for a way to bypass the PIN. This is why Garmin added this feature to their GPS's.

SOURCE: i have a garmin nuvi 680 gps unit lock

Hi,
When you first programmed the GPS you have the opportunity to select a safe location,
if you selected the safe location, go back to that location, and the lock will not be on, it is for the reason of forgetting it, but it will only work in that location ~ ( ie: your old driveway )
If you cannot do this,
it's a Garmin job to unlock it,
There is no other way to unlock it.

Regards
Richard.

Garmin Nuvi 610- working perfectly then sudden crackling and now loss of sound/or at best crackly and intermiitent sound- but map/navigation and on-screen directions fine

Check the audio output setting on the nuvi. There is a possibility that the FM Transmitter setting has been turned on or that the device has been muted.
To check the audio output setting:
  1. Touch the Speaker icon below the Wrench icon.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, touch Audio Output.
  3. Make sure that the Internal Speaker is selected and touch OK (660, 670, 680, and 5000 models only).
  4. Make sure that the MUTE box does not have a check mark in it. If it does, touch the box to clear the selection.
  5. Make sure the volume level is at a reasonable percent level.

Garmin Nuvi 680 no longer has any audio

Hello :

It's a common software problem with your device . To correct the problem I recommend you to reset it .

Here is how to reset your device :

1:Turn the Nuvi on.

2:Touch the tools icon on the main screen. The tools icon is represented by a wrench surrounded by a blue circle.

3:Touch the "Settings" icon which appears as a wrench.

4:Push the "Restore" button at the bottom of the screen. A confirmation message will appear asking to confirm restoring the Nuvi to factory settings. Push yes to restore the factory settings
............................................................................................
Try this for hard reset .

Turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom right corner of the touchscreen [ Don't let go ] , and then power on the GPS unit. You should be prompted whether do you really want to erase all user data, or asked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press “Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost, so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.

Touchscreen on garmin nuvi 680 GPS stopped working

Try reseting the nuvi, there is a reset button on the bottom or on the back, some models have it on the front under the display cover.

if that doesn't help the digitizer which is the part on top of the lcd display that registers the touch could have failed and may need to be replaced.

I haven't seen many garmin repairers, you might have to get in touch with garmin about it, check ebay for replacement parts but if I remember correctly garmin takes care of it and don't distripute much parts.

there's not much you can do if the screen is not responding.
the solution is to replace the touchscreen preferably at a specialized center.

You dont have much option, if the touch screen failos or becomes intermittent then its dying or dead and can only be fixed by a total replacement
Cheaper to buy another GPS
