You may go to BIOS, basically in Compaq PCs you have an option to turn on/off write protection for HDD.

You need to go to BIOS and use the command Fix /MBR, which will refresh the first boot sector of the HDD and resolves this issue many a times.

How to remove "Flash drive write protection" error appears in Windows XP

Why do you get a "The disk is write protected" error when attempting to transfer files to USB flash drive?

Permissions in the PC may have restricted writing files to the USB flash drive. Disabling restrictions should fix this issue.
WARNING: Backup your registry before editing.

STEP 1 - Backup the registry

1. Unplug the USB flash drive. 2. Click Start > Run, type in regedit then click OK. 3. From the registry menu, click File, select Export. 4. Under Export range select All. 5. Name the file backup.reg and save it to the desktop.

STEP 2 - Disable the "Write Protect" permission in the Registry

1. On the left pane, click the "+" beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE 2. Navigate to SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePolicies. 3. On the right pane, right-click on WriteProtect and select Modify. 4. In the Value data field, type the number 0 5. Click OK.

Good Luck

I cant save anything on the 1T external hard drive. I am running windows 7. The computer reconizes it but wont save

The Hard Drive must be Write protected. There might be a Toggle switch around External Drive for Write Protection. Or can you save files to any other USB Drive (Pen Drive) ?

Whenever I attempt to save a file to my external storage it flashes a message ''unable to modify and says it is a read only''. How can I fix this?

All you have to do is find the file you want to save. Right click on the file and choose "properties". Take the check mark out of the "read only" box and click "apply". Now you should be able to save it.

Unable to retireve file

Not very unusual, many people do not eject their USB devices correctly, causing data loss or corruption. You can attempt file recovery software on it as you would any other hard drive. Don't use the drive any more until you attempt recovery. I use Stellar Phoenix. Good luck.
