Question about Eureka 2961AVZ Bagless Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

Smoking belt Hey I have a Eureka 2961 avz bagless vacuum, and if it's on for a few minutes i can smell the belt burning.  If the vacuum is left on any longer the belt starts smoking.  I took the case off and there was a little debris but not much.  Is there a cause and fix or just time to replace the belt?

I think it's the belt too. But how do you change it?

Same problem with the belt stinking. It then broke and I bought a new one and the tension pulled the brush too tight and took the ends of the agitating brush off. I noticed while changing it that the post from the moter is rusty and machine is only a year old. Can't find where to get a new rotating agitator brush either.

I am having the same problem, wasn't sure actually what it was until I read these and others on Amazon--there are many customer complaints on that website. My belt is not broken but the vacuum has been smoking and it stinks.

when i turn it in it starts smoking and smelling but I dont think my belt is broke!

I have had this vacuum (madle 2961 AVZ) for about a year I only have one area rug in my home, so I only vacuum once a week. After 1 year only using it about 50 times my belt broke. Using the second belt that came with the vacuum, I used it about two more time before it began smoking. Upon checking the belt, the belt was fine, but one of the plastic caps on the end of the roller (on the belt side) had melted inside the baring that rendered the vacuum useless.

you know this is mighty funny that i just found this site because i have a burning smell coming from mine too. i was about to take it back to walmart and exchange it for the second time. Then i went to put it in the car and the dog solved it all for me, she chewed my cord. I think i will get something besides this eureka next time.

Belt is slipping because the bearings on the beater brushes, which it turns, are jammed or full of dust.
Alternatively the belt has stretched after being overheated and needs replacing because it now slips.

SOURCE: My vacuum (Eureka Bagless Model 2961 AVZ) will not START!

Had exactly the same problem with my upright Eureka Model 5893 bagless. Eventually, the handle would get hot, and finally it just quit. When handle was disassembled, the wires were melted and it was toast. Ordered a switch after talking to several repair men. Talked to Eureka, too, and they were absolutely no help. Cheap wiring and switch made in China. Good luck trying to find a switch. vacuum-depot.com has switches, so you might try there, but make sure you get the 3-prong switch (same switch used on Eureka's Genesis). It is Part #27871.

My Model 2961 Eureka wont take power now?

Hi,

Anytime that you smell that electrical burning smell on a vacuum cleaner, this is the motor going bad. There are two distinctive burning smells in fixing vacuum cleaners, the electrical burning smell which is the motor, and a rubber burning smell which is the belt.

The bagless vacuums cleaners in general, their motors last usually no more then 3-5 years. The motor in bagless vacuums work much harder then the motors in their bagged counterparts.

The motors in Eureka vacuums can range in price from $70-$120. If you can provide me with the exact model number on your vacuum cleaner (can be found on the bottom or the back of the machine on the sticker that also contains the serial number) I will be able to get you the part number, and price of the motor that's used in your vacuum.

It may be worth considering to just get a new vacuum cleaner at this point. If you'd like me to give you a personalized recommendation specifically for your unique cleaning needs, I'd be honored to do so. Please just let me know what types of floors you have mostly in the home and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of vacuum cleaners.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you found this helpful, please be sure to rate the repair helpful so other Fixya users that have this same problem can easily find the answer.

Thanks so much,

Chris J.

My eureka vacuum won't suction and starts to smoke when I try to use it. It sounds like it is suctioning when I first turn it on, but after about 20 seconds it begins to smell like burning and does not...

The problem is that your belt is stretched and worn. This causes that burning smell and it also causes the vacuum to not pick up well. You need to replace the belt. Here is the belt you need and the manual with instructions:

Eureka bagless model 2961 partswere do i get them

It depends on the parts you are looking for. If you go to your local vacuum repair shop they might have parts for your model. If not then there are parts available on Eureka's website. If you need replacement belts for your model you can get them here:

I had this same problem. The brush roll wouldn't spin, smoke came out, and it smelled like burning rubber. I changed the belt thinking that would fix the problem but it didn't, so I took the belt back off and checked the motor shaft in the back and found a whole bunch of hair wrapped around the shaft. Once I cut out the hair with some scissors and replaced the belt, everything worked like normal. I hope this helps.

Eureka 2961 BVZ no suction, burning smell

I have the same vacuum. The burning smell is letting you know that your belt is either broken or about to break. I have had mine for a year and have had to replace the belt 5 times. Now I have to replace the brush roller 'cause it broke under normal use. My next vacuum will be a Dyson Ball.

Smell/suction

The brushroll may spin when looking at it but stops when pressure of the floor is applied. The belts stretch, so they look fine but are not. The smell - if it's a rubber smell - would also be the belt. Some, or most, brushrolls can get hair in the ends that could also cause a smell and belt problem.

Burning smell/lost suction

Is the brush roll turning while on the carpet. If the belt is old, then it has stretched and will slip causing a rubber smell. But if it is an electrical smell, then your motor is failing and will need to be replaced.
