How tout change Lens

Generally the COOLPIX line of cameras does not have a lens that can be removed or changed. Does this answer your question?
Some of these cameras have a lens cover that is like an external shutter. To use these cameras you must expose the lens, usually by moving a small sliding piece that is next to the lens, either up or sideways.

Message: Lock lens aperture ring at minimum aperture (largest f-number) I think I'm doing this but the message won't go away and the camera won't work.

You must lock the aperture ring to f/22, so the camera can engage the aperture adjustment lever on the lens. Then, you can change the aperture with the command wheel.

When you change the aperture with the command wheel the aperture ring on the lens doesn't move when the camera actually adjusts the lens aperture.

Take the lens off and locate the aperture adjustment lever on the lens mount.

Unfortunately, this won't work with older AF lenses. So if you are using an older lens, the only thing you can do is change the camera setting to M (Manual) to adjust the aperture on the lens yourself.

In camera optics, where is the aperture located? At the focal point? If so, why doesn't the aperature size ( f/stop) change the image sise on the film/sensor?

The aperture is located somewhere within the body of the lens, but not at the focal point of the lens. Lenses are designed so that changing the aperture changes the amount of light passing through the lens without affecting the image size. Some lenses are designed so that other changes within the lens affect the image size---that's what zoom lenses do.

Firstly, remove your nosepiece. Grab hold of the frame at one of the top corners with an index finger and thumb - use your other index finger and thumb to hold the lens, apply presure and gently pull apart. The notch will release. To mount your new lens, insert one notch into the frame and press the other notch into place. Do not apply pressure to the stems or hinge.

The USM engine may be out of order, or there is a bad contact in the lens.

Is the lens a Canon EF or EF-S lens? Have you used it before on this particular camera body? Did you do anything else (change memory cards, etc.) at the same time you changed the lens?

Try taking off the lens and cleaning the electrical (metal) contacts on both the lens and the body with a small dust-free cloth or pencil eraser. If that doesn't help, switch in the lens you were using before. If it works with the original lens, there may be an electrical problem with the other one. If it no longer works with the original lens, you may need to have it serviced.
