Dirty spark plug & oil.

I have a B&S 4-stroke lawnmower. The spark plug gets incredibly sooty after just 10 minutes or so of running the mower. I clean the plug, replace it and 10 minutes later (if that) the mower stops and the plug is dirty again. I strongly suspect I had too much oil in the mower so I replaced the oil with about 50% of what was in there before. After less than 30 minutes the new oil was also very black. Can you give me some tips to fix these problems.

Hi try a new spark plug check if it's got petrol check for spark put the lead on the plug before U put it in hold the side of plug on the mower & pull the cord to c if it's got spark.. check for compression put your finger over plug hole & pull the cord if it's got compression it should push your finger away good luck

I have recently been given a Victa Catch and Release Lawnmower,but no manual. How much oil do I put in before commencing use. And How do I drain dirty oil?

which model and a internet search gets you its user manual

start with 600 ml oil and top up as required
try not to over fill

look for drain plug up under blades or on the side of motor

I have a John Deere JS30 self propelled lawn mower I had issues with it running for 15 minutes and then it stops running. Was low on oil. Added oil over the full line now it runs for 3 min and dies

Wayne, correct your oil level to full line, change your spark plug and try mower. If still acting up after a couple minutes, the Gas cap vent may be plugged, remove or loosen cap to see if mower will run longer and better. If no improvement, the carburetor is dirty and needs cleaned or rebuilt.

How to fix a 3.5 lawn mower?

You can fix these yourself, all you have to do is to follow the instructions below,
1 Remove the spark plug lead from the spark plug and move away from cylinder head. Always do this before attempting any repairs to a lawnmower.
2 If your lawnmower is a "four stroke" mower (separate gasoline and oil), tip the mower so that the spark plug is pointing skyward. Never tip it on its side with the spark plug to the ground.
3 If your lawnmower is "2 stroke" (oil and gasoline mixed) turn off fuel tap. You can tip a two stroke mower any way that is suitable to you.
4 To change a blade, or blade disc, it is often easier to remove the spark plug and feed a length of string into the cylinder head to 'lock' the piston while trying to un-do the blade bolt(s).
5 Check the motor's "air filter" while doing this sort of maintenance as a dirty or clogged air filter will affect engine performance and increase fuel consumption of your mower. Symptoms of a clogged air filter include inability to start, starting and quickly stopping after several sputters, or a weak idle. You may also see oily or smoky exhaust.
6 If your mower is a "four stroke" model, change the oil at least once a year. When it is tipped over with the spark plug in the air, is a good time to remove the "oil fill" plug and drain oil into an old ice-cream container for recycling.

Spark plug fouls out after 5 minutes of running

If plug is sooty, this is due to mixture being too rich. This can be caused by dirty air filter,
Clean or replace the filter and if this doesn't improve the situation, adjust the carburettor to ensure the mixture isn't too rich.The procedure for this is to turn the adjustment screw (if there is one present) slowly anticlockwise until engine almost cuts out, then turn the screw clockwise until engine almost cuts out. Set the screw halfway between these two positions.
If the plug is black and oily this could be due to engine bore wear and oil getting up by the piston into the cylinder (in the case of a 4 stroke engine) or due to an excess of 2 stroke oil in gas (in the case of a 2 stroke engine) Gas / Oil mix should be in the ratio of 50:1

Losing RPMS

Try a new spark plug. Carbon build up from the mower oil is probably robbing some of the spark. Mix the 2 stroke oil 32 to 1. That means 4 oz. oil per gallon of gas.

The oil is drained by removing the drain plug on the underside of the mower, where the blade is. The gas can be drained by removing the gas line from the carburetor and letting the gas drain into a container. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug before any work is done to the mower. But, really depending on just how long the mower was on its side, the mower should be OK after running for a few minutes. Have you let it run for several minutes? The oil in the combustion chamber should burn off. The one thing to check is the spark plug. It may have some carbon buildup on it from the oil. It can be cleaned with some spray carburetor cleaner, or you can just replace it for a few dollars.

2 stroke gas mixture in 4 stroke lawnmower

Your carburetor jet is probably clogged with oil. Try an additive in the gasoline -- something for cleaning injectors -- it will only require a small amount -- use the same ratio as described on the label.

You'll have to keep starting the engine to get the cleaner into the carburetor. After you've done this several dozen times, let it sit for a day.

If this doesn't clean it out, you'll need to take the carburetor apart and clean it.
