Do you want to make a dual-boot system? you must have installed windows OS first and leave a non-partitioned drive in your hard Disk. Then you can install Ubuntu next, instaling it to the non-partitioned drive. When the PC boots, you will be prompted to what OS to boot.

Anyway, you can Install Windows XP in any free Drive. But it is dangerous since Windows Installer might destroy your Ubuntu installation files.

Have HP computer with windows 10 home and can't download linux into computer

go to the linux web site and down load ubantu to a usb stick
then burn a disc from that usb stick
use the disc to install the os on the computer
ubuntu is the same system as win 7 but with different names for the files and folders so it is easy to pick up and use
if you still have problems there are linux forums with plenty of help as to problems associated with using linux products
I found that it will not install directly from the usb stick and that has been mentioned in the forums but is readily capable from the disc for some reason or other
there are many linux operating system such as apache and the like but ubuntu is by far the easiest and most common

No grub loader

You havn't mentioned whether Ubantu inquired about the grub settings during its installation or not. If Windows doesn't have the boot loader than you can manually check it by looking at the boot flag set at a particular partition. This can be done by using an open source media GParted live cd, which can be used by booting from your CD Drive and then you can check and also set the boot flags at a particular partition. You can find it here: LiveCD-Download-8864.html">http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/GParted-LiveCD-Download-8864.html After burning, boot from it and in the GParted menu set the boot flag for the Ubantu partition, then you can use your your Ubantu, only if installed correctly, may be you can't use windows at that time, then remove the boot flag and windows will be back. Try installing Ubantu again and check the settings for grub bootloader.

M S Excel slow in win vista on lenova laptop 7757-63q model.

Vista has many problems.
I dumped Vista and reinstall Windows XP, and install Open Office, it is free on the internet.
You just have to remember to save any file from Open Office with a MS extension.

As long as Microsoft Excel is installed (if a Windows machine) or OpenOffice is installed (either a Linux or a Windows machine), then yes.

Problem in linux installation

Hi, I also have an acer aspire 5050 (AMD 64bit CPU).
It came preinstalled with Vista Home Basic which I decided to get rid of. I downloaded a copy of SUSE 10 Enterprise Desktop (5 CD iso's images from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/x86_64/10.0/iso/ )and burn't them to CD, and installed it straigt off CD.
It installed fine with Gnome (havent tried KDE). There are certain problems that you need to tweak before it all works ok.

The 5 in 1 card reader wont work at all, but I have heard that it might in future kernel upgrades.

The sound doesn't work untill you edit a file (follow the guide at http://nosrednaekim.wordpress.com/2007/05/28/linux-on-the-acer-aspire-5050/) after doing this and rebooting it works great.

The graphics was another issue, I have an ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. I couldn't get 3d accelleration to work for ages, but have managed to now. First off you have to download the ati driver for the "Mobility Radion X300" for linux (x86_64 for 64bit CPU) from http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html. When downloaded just run it in a terminal ("sh ./ati*%$%*%$*%"). Then after rebooting (the tricky part for non linux geeks!) open a terminal, "su" to root and run "init 3" then log in as root and run "aticonfig --initial -f" when complete run "aticonfig --app=maya --fsaa=on --fs=4 --ovt=opengl" then when complete run "aticonfig --effective=now" then "init 5". Now log on and you can enable 3d in display properties (in control center). The 3d desktop is so much better than Vista could ever be. I have only just got my graphics card working and I havent messed about with all the settings yet so you can probably get it working alot faster with some tweaking.

If you're interested in porgramming or compiling programs for your OS you will need to "build your Kernel" this takes a bit of time but a good guide is at http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_compilation_suse i skipped page one and some other bits)

Hope this helps, and you enjoy linux.
