A local computer store or Radio Shack should have a splitter that you can use for that. I also have speakers into those connectors and needed a splitter to also connect a headset for online game matches. Should be under $8.

Connection

Does it have a USB connection or regular mic connection? If it has a USB connection, install the software first. If it has a regular mic connection, then fiddle with the control panel such as sound.

How do you turn on the internal mic

Many portable computers no longer include a built-in Condenser Microphone (Mic) in their standard specification, even if a Mic seems to be present (a small hole with an image of a microphone or "Mic" beside it normally sited on the upper part of the screen's plastic frame or occasionally on the Control Panel at the foot of the screen, often what seems to be the Mic is actually just a redundant, optional extra facility under which a MIc could be added by the manufacturer if the specification of the computer required one.

Since many computer-based activities that require Mics, such as Conference Calling, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP - voice calls over the internet) Telephony, Gaming, Skype Internet calls (VOIP calls + Webcam), E-Mail Account Voice Calls, Voice Messaging, Karaoke, Music Recording, etc. also tend to require earphones/headphones as well as Mics, a consensus has built around a preference for dedicated headsets with combined Mic and Headphones functions.

To establish whether a built-in Condenser Mic is specified for and installed in this computer (assuming this computer runs a Windows Operating System):

Start -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control -> Options -> Properties -> scroll down through the audio-related device list to find "Mic" -> tick "Mic" -> OK -> untick "Mute" at the foot of the "Mic" Panel -> Close Volume Control -> Start -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder -> click the button with red dot on it to start recording sound via the built-in Condenser Mic -> Speak, clap or generate sounds near the computer -> if a Mic were installed the waveform in the center of the Sound Recorder box would modulate to reflect the sounds you are making -> if no sound registers during test recording, then check for a power up/mute Mic switch on the front or sides of the computer or on the Control Panel or by using a Function Key to toggles the Mic on and off (press and hold Fn + the relevant Audio Input/Mic Function [F+number] key), then repeat the above test recording procedure with another set of sounds.

If any of the devices, switches, Function keys or tools mentioned above is missing or inaccessible on this computer, then the probability is that no built-in Mic is specified for or installed on it.

In any event, in terms of convenience, ease of use, comfort, posture and both inbound and outbound sound quality, by far the best device for a Conference Call is a dedicated headset (see examples and a potential source below):

Does my computer have a built in mic?

Hi Jaygeewallac,

I tried to locate a manual for your computer to find more details - no success. (But found a lot of people having the same issue...) Regardless - I don't think that your computer is equipped with a microphone; laptops usually have a built-in one, desktops don't.
You can always try: Go to start -> All Programs -> Accessories ->
Entertainment -> Sound Recorder
and try to record something. If you were successful - your PC has a built in microphone!

However - if you want to use Skype, I strongly recommend to use a headset with a microphone. I am using this program daily and although my laptop has a mic and speakers, I always use my headset. Without it you have to stick your head to where your mic is located and turn the volume of the speakers up a lot so you are able to understand what your son is saying. Don't do it.

A USB headset costs you between 20 -50$ and you can either get it online (Newegg or Tigerdirect) or at your local RadioShack or BestBuy. I would recommend buying it locally, because in case it does not fit your head comfortably, you can exchange it very easy.
I would furthermore recommend a USB connection, because it is not as flimsy as two small audio connectors and also easier to plug in and out.

Did this informatin help you? If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I am happy to help you with whatever you want to know.

Skype not working

Sir,

Click this link for more information........

http://support.skype.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=35

Also Check........

On a PC with external speakers and also a headset with microphone. Windows XP is configured so that standard audio are external speakers and standard microphone is the headset. Skype is configured to use the headset for audio in and out.

This way one can listen to sound from the PC and from MP3 players through external speakers and if there is a call to make or take, this is going through the headset.

But now there is the problem that the noise level for the headset is too low. Increasing volume has no effect on the headset, it only affects the external speaker's volume.

Now the solution: Going to the control panel and opening the sound setting, go to the audio tab. The external speakers are selected as default. Just temporarily select the headset and then click on volume just below. You can now set the volume for the headset, click OK and click cancel (!!!) on the sound control dialog box. This way the external speakers remain as default output.

Skype-->Tools -> Options -->Sound Devices-->audio device/USB/etc Audio Device (do NOT use windows default device)
You can also tick the ring pc speaker check box as this is a good backup to alert you even
if the main speakers are off or turned down.

Windows:
Start-->Control panel-->Sound and Audio devices
On the audio tab set the default playback device to your main soundcard(AC97/Audio-chip/add-on-adapter), etc.
Your installed audio device must be present there.
If not, reinstall audio device

thanks
good luck
