Question about Epson Stylus C86 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

After printing a photo the ink does not set on the photo paper. I can wipe it off and it leaves a substance like soot on my fingers. Why is this? I am using Epson premium glossy photopaper and leaving the prints for 24 hours before touching them.

I'm going to ask the obvious question here. Are you putting the paper in with the right side up?
I haven't got any similar paper here at the moment but I do know that many glossy photopapers look 'glossier' on the back than on the front.
The back is generally impervious and so the ink just sits in its little spheres on the surface and evenutally dries out to a fine powder - the soot you see on your fingers.
If that is not the case post a reply and let's think about other possibilities.

When printing photographs with photo paper in photo quality setting, the printer is putting far to much black ink in dark areas and the ink is not dry, leaving a blotchy brown/black appearance.

Customize the settings. With a photo open, choose File > Print. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose the printer. For Mac OS X version 10.4 or later, click Advanced. From the same pop-up menu, choose Quality & Media. From the Print Quality menu, choose Automatic or Best.

Sounds like the ink isn't having time to dry and is rubbing along paper.

Paper may be too thick. If it prints OK on normal paper (test first) but not on thick card, then it doesn't support thick paper settings.

ADJUST THE COLOR AND PRINT SPEED You may need to adjust the color and print speed. CHECK THE LEVEL OF INK IN THE PRINT CARTRIDGES 1 From the Finder desktop, double-click the Lexmark X5400 Series folder. 2 Double-click the Lexmark X5400 Series Utility icon. 3 From the Maintenance tab, check the ink levels of the cartridges. Try one or more of the following: CHECK PAPER • Use the appropriate paper for the document. If you are printing photos or other high-quality images, for best results use Lexmark Photo Paper or Lexmark PerfectFinish Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Your print cartridges are not compatible with this type of paper. • Use a paper that is a heavier weight or bright white. CHECK PRINT CARTRIDGES If the document still does not have the print quality you want, follow these steps: 1 Align the print cartridges. For more information, see "Aligning print cartridges" on page. If print quality has not improved, continue to step 2. 2 Clean the print cartridge nozzles. For more information, see "Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles" . Print is skewed
  1. The rear access door might not be fully locked into place, causing the paper to skew in the all-in-one. Remove the rear access door by pushing in on both release tabs as shown in the figure below. Inspect it for damage, and then reinsert it. Make sure it is securely latched in place. 2. The paper feed rollers may be dirty. Over time, paper fibers and dust will stick to the rollers and should be removed.
    1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the all-in-one and open the front to expose the print mechanism.
    2. Gently wipe the paper feed rollers with a soft clean cloth slightly dampened with clean water. These rollers may be rotated with the power unplugged.
    3. Remove the rear access door shown in the figure above and wipe the paper supply feed rollers. These rollers may be rotated with the power unplugged. Allow the water to dry for five minutes before reinserting the rear access door and locking it in place.
    4. Close the all-in-one and reinsert the power cord.

My printer has problems printing dark colours. When printing pictures or text, it leaves horizontal lines on black only. I have a continuis ink system which has lots of black. Any ideas?

Try changing the print paper type to something other than plain paper. Use the matte paper setting, or the photo glossy. The printer will lay down more ink at these specialty settings.

My HP Photosmart suddenly started blobbing out ink.

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

Larges spots of ink on paper

That used to happen to me as well. It turned out that when I left the paper standing in the tray, it would bend slightly at the end. I stopped leaving the paper in the tray in the afternoons and only putting it in when i needed to print and that seemed to solve the problem. A hassle I know but thats the cost of buying a photo printer to do office jobs.

My canon i960 is printing only green

I had this problem. If I tried to print a black& white photo on to glossy paper, it would only print green. When I tried on to plain paper using the 'fast' option, it printed in black. The reason for this is, on plain paper it uses the black cartridge, but output to glossy photo paper using the 'high' option, uses the mix of colours in your colour cartridge. If one or more of your colours has run out, you will get a print with the ink left in the cartridge. Replace the cartridge or refill it & your problem is solved.

Ink won't dry

Unless the problem coincides with a change in ink cartridge, my guess is an incompatibility between the ink and the paper. Could you have changed the paper you're printing on. If so, is the new paper of a different quality? If you're using coated (eg photo) paper, are you printing on the right side? Check the "paper quality" setting on the printer (or the software you're using to drive it) - it needs to match the specification of the stuff you're printing onto. Photo quality papers are capable of absorbing much more ink than plain paper (which is how you get the colour intensity). If the printer thinks it's using photo paper, it will throw out enough ink to get that colour build - leaving a sticky mess if what is really loaded is just plain paper. A.
