So the desktop is working with the wired connection. That means the wired part of the router is working . you will need to check the wireless settings of the router. For this you will need to access the router set up page. When you try to connect to the wireless network , Do you get any message ? Or you are not able to see any wireless network ? The message will be important to identify the problem. First try to connect to the wireless network on the laptop. Try to change the wireless channel on the router. That may help you. Netgear Wireless Router won't work with my Linksys wired router.

As asked above, why would you want the wired router and the wireless router on the same network?

The direct answer to your question(s) is found on Netgear's website. http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965/kw/wpn824/r_id/166

The key is to turn off the Netgear DHCP, and give it an address that is unreachable by the Linksys DHCP ie if the Linksys gives out IP addresses starting at 100 or 101, you set your IP address to 99, turn off the DHCP, and plug it into the network NOT using the WAN port, ever. We tend to start at 251 or 221 just for clarity's sake.

The point is you answered your own question. The Netgear wired and wireless works fine. One piece of equipment and better reporting statistics....what are you missing?

Wired and wireless computers

First get your router works with the internet on the wired connection before considering the wireless connection simplying the initial problem.

Once the router works wired is time to try the wireless.

Once the wireless works unsecured you may want to change the router and wireless adapter to secure the wireless network.

So this can be a three step process.

If you internet service is provided by a cable(tv) there is a reasonable chance your router will work out of the box no configuration changes. However, if your internet service is supplied on the phone line chances your router will work as it comes out of the box are much less. Who is your Internet Service Provider and if possible can you supply a link to their help/support website so I can see if they supply configuration instructions?
