Go to the NEC website and look for the disk drive drivers that are appropriate for the service tag of your notebook. Or, if using windows, go to: Control Panel- Add/Remove hardware and see if that finds it. If not, if it is listed in installed hardware then try updating the drivers.
Right click device in list, select properties, select drivers then select update driver.

The reason your DVD R was not read- is the drive is a CD-RW, meaning it can read CD, CD R, and CD RW disks- NOT DVD, DVD R, DVD RW
