Downloading onto Garmin 200W without USB cable

I have a Garmin 200W and I'm interested in downloading new vehicle icons onto my GPS unit. I have an SD card, but I don't have the USB cable that has to be purchased separately. Is there any way I can just download the content onto my SD card (my computer has a media reader built-in) and then onto the unit?

SOURCE: Nuvi 200w map download and sd card

Just completed 1 hr 15 min call w/ Garmin support (first 45 mins on hold)...

- Install WebUpdater This will update the garmin's firmware.
- Restart the garmin to complete the install of FW
- Make sure that you have room on your garmin to accept the webupdater and new map... delete unused help, voice and vehicle files. I now only have American English on my Garmin, but if I pick up a new language I can go to webupdater and reinstall those languages I dropped
- Restart the map update. I'm in the middle of it now, but so far so good

Did you try to perform a map upgrade to 2008? Turn on the Garmin and from the main menu touch the wrench, then press Map, then look for Map info.

SOURCE: Garmin nuvi 200w can't update all 49 lower states

OK, I just finally am getting through all of this myself.

First, the bad news. You cannot load all of the lower 49 states onto your Garmin 200W as-is. The map file is over 1GB and the 200W only has 991MBs of memory.

So, go out and get yourself a SD card. I got a 2GB card at OfficeDepot for $8. It was at the counter, not back with the other cards they carry (Note: The speed showed as 60x. The slightly more expensive ones, $12-$15, may be faster, like 150x.)

You'll also need to get yourself MapInstall, available from the Garmin site. BUT, don't try to use this right away, a mistake I made. If you do, you basically get a message that MapInstall can't be installed because it's not already installed. Seriously.

BUT, MapInstall GETS installed, or whatever, when you load your 2010 maps (or partial maps), so after you do your partial install, THEN you can install the MapInstall program. (May not be necessary, but remember, I did this out of order. Look for a "Garmin" folder under your Programs, or All Programs, and see if it's already there after you install your 2010 maps.)

Next, run MapInstall. The next mistake I made was that at the window where it finds your device, I clicked on the NEXT button. DON'T. Notice that your device is shown in a drop-down box. Click on that, and you can select your SD card for the destination.

THEN click NEXT. On my system, it appears as if it shows you what IS already on the 200W, and lets you select whatever you want to add. I put everything else available on the SD card.

I just this minute finished loading "the rest" and checked it out. Works flawlessly. I easily found a seafood restaraunt in Anchorage (Alaska was not loaded in the intitial install.)

Just remember that you have to keep the SD card in the Garmin at all times to use those maps. That really shouldn't be a problem though.

Hope this helps eveyone.

By connecting your garmin to your computer via USB, the sd card you have loaded in it will turn up as removable storage on your computer. You can treat it like a hardrive.

Without a cable, you can remove the sd card from the garmin and place it in a card reader hooked up to your computer.

I have a nuvi 200, less than 2 yrs old. Has probkems acquiring satelite. Has GPS sw 2.50b and audio 2.20. Also, where and how much is usb adaptor that fits to left side of unit (special plug in to unit

Acquisition of satellites has been addressed in new firmware / system software updates for the Garmin Nuvi 200W.

The usb cable you require is a standard USB to mini-USB cable. MP3 or camera cables will work.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Nuvi 350 System Software Missing

If you have a nuvi 350 download the software to your computer and then load the software onto a formatted sd card. Insert the sd card and bootup the Nuvi 350. The sofware will then load onto the Nuvi 350. If you have a Nuvi 200 I would think it works the same but I have not tried it.
Hope this helps

I did exactly the same thing!. This is how I fixed it.
Use Updater.exe NOT WebUpdate. Download the latest firmware for your unit (the rgn file), then connect your nuvi via usb. Turn it on and hold the power button left, at the same time drag and drop the rgn file onto the Updater, exe. It will start automatically and reload the firmware over the corrupt one.

Here are the files:-

Updating 200W S/N 1F4003567

On the 200w the power slot is actually a mini usb port that you can use to plug into your computer to charge and install updates. Start HERE for some basic information and links to the manual. You will also need to purchase a usb cable if you do not have one that works. Click HERE for an inexpensive cable I have ordered for my clients.

To download the updating software click HERE Once you have downloaded and installed the software open it up and plug in the gps unit and the software should automatically recognize it. Click next and it will look for firmware updates (note: not map updates)

For map updates you must enter the serial number off your 200w HERE.

If you have any more questions let me know. Please rate me well if this has helped you.

Windows XP will not recognize Garmin 200W

I had the same issue. I would plug it in and it would recognize the device then it would disappear.

What I did to solve the problem was to first turn on my Gamin 200w. After it was finished loading maps then I plugged in in to the usb port. My machine recognized the device without any problems. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Hope that helps.
