I 'm having problems printing

I 'm having problems printing with my PGBK cartridge on Pixma iP4200, 4 years old. I did let the cartridge run out. I have been using after market ink with no problem. I have cleaned the base of the print head following my ink supplier's instructions.
I am getting error message 6500 which will not disappear after I switch the printer on and off. Other than that I never switch the printer off. Your help wpould be greatly appreciated.
