My Haier HDN455 dehumidifier runs continuously but never produces any water in the tank. Upon further inspection it appears only the fan is running most of the time, with the compressor only kicking in for a few seconds at time before clicking off again for several minutes. A quick check of the current flowing to the compressor motor indicated about 14 amps, which is nearly three times the rated current. Is that merely a spike in startup current that would drop back to about 5 amps if it kept running, or should I assume the motor and/or compressor is faulty and toss the whole thing? I'd hate to trash it if it's just a controller issue or a capacitor that needs replacement, but am not sure how to diagnose it further since it won't stay running long enough to figure out what else could be wrong.

- Thanks for the response...it's a reasonable response, but a parameter that had already occurred to me and been eliminated. If you think about the current characteristics I posted in my question, it turns out that it was definitely related to the problem. Turns out I had a bad start capacitor in the unit. I couldn't find anything similar locally, but found one in an old HID light ballast that I figured it couldn't hurt to try, and sure enough, it worked. It might run smoother if I get the right cap so I'll keep looking, but in the meantime this thing works great even down to 50°F ambient.
First ! you are trying to use this dehum in cold weather conditions. this time of the year there is little humidity in the air. best conditions for the dehum to work will be when the temp. is 65 degrees or high, and the humidity is 60% or higher. if you don't trust what I said then take it to sears to be checked out.

My 1 yr old Haier HDN455 dehumidifier has stopped working, although the green "running" light says it's on and the red "tank full" light works when I remove the tank. Any ideas?
