Hi the 8406 was common for the intermediat gear to go have you yet stripped the gear box?
Quick test wear gloves to do this!
Turn on the drill if the chuck does not turn spin the chuck with a gloved hand TAKE CARE!! if the chuck catches grip one of the gears are gone.
Hope this helps let me know. Sean

How do cars with clutches work?

Clutches are useful in devices that have two rotating shafts. In these devices, one of the shafts is typically driven by a motor or pulley, and the other shaft drives another device. In a drill, for instance, one shaft is driven by a motor and the other drives a drill chuck. The clutch connects the two shafts so that they can either be locked together and spin at the same speed, or be decoupled and spin at different speeds.Clutches are useful in devices that have two rotating shafts. I think the clutch has gone on my cordless sds 24v dewalt drill, where can I get this repaired

Yes it could be the clutch, cost is about 32.00 just for the part. There is also another item that wears in the gearbox that it could be. (selector mechasim) You don't say where you are in the country. email info@impresstools.com they might be able to tell you.

Motor works and spins but as soon as the drill touches the wall drill stops but motor keeps going.

Check the speed switch on top - sometimes it doesn't fully seat in the 1 or 2 position. Switch it to the opposite setting, run it, then switch back, until it seats properly. Also check the clutch control ring for the same issue.

Definitely a faulty clutch. Take it back to where you bought it (if it was recent), otherwise send it or go to a Makita Service Centre.

Hope that helps

it sounds like the clutch may have oil on the shoes or oil in the clutch drum if it has a clutch or the clutch is binding and not fully locking up.

Makita 6349DWDE 18V Cordless Clutch

could be the clutch needs replaced, but I would check to make sure the high/low switch is fully engaged. Inside the clutch there is ring gear that could have the teeth rounded off I would go to Makitatools.com and type in your model number for a breakdown so you can see what you are getting into, they are not that hard if you are mechanically inclined and just watch how you do it.

Try rotating the driver adjustment to make sure it is on a definate number, not in between or put it all the way to the drill position. A little 3-in-one oil does wonders as dirt and dust will keep it from rotating and engaging easly. If this does not work and the clutch is stripped, cost of rebuilding it is not worth it, usually 70% to 80% of a new one and other parts on it will wear out and you will be fixing it again. Good Luck
