One thing you can try is power cycling the unit. Off at the breaker/power switch for 15 min then back on, sometimes this will clean the bios and get it back online. If that does not work the next thing to try is to clean off the flame sensor. Thats a little metal piece that is in the path of the flame.

Some water heaters allows changeover by installing new chipboard or changing dip switches... some do not.
Propane burns much hotter with higher pressure than natural gas

Go to www.grainger.com and look for a "power pile generator" this is a millivolt thermocouple that may be just what you need to make your heater work again
the glass is there as a service tool to veiw pilot and flame or relite just get a peice of sheet metal and cover hole with it ,it will work short term or long term
Sounds like the flame sensor. But it could be the thermostat. Is the furnace standing pilot or electronic spark or hot surface ignition. I would start by checking thermostat. Turn power off to furnace take thermostat off wall and take wires marked r & w and connect them together. Turn power back on if furnace works then change out thermostat. Most eclectronic ignition Furnaces have a flam sensor, You could take flame sensor out and clean it up with steel wool or wire brush. If you need anymore help just reply back .
You should have 3 wires going to the gas valve - MV(mainvalve), PV(pilot valve) and MV/PV (or Common). Make sure all of these are properly wired and tight.
You also may have a dirty FLAME SENSOR on your pilot/ignitor assembly. You may need to remove the pilot tube and the pilot assembly to clean the sensor with sandpaper.
Be careful not to damage any parts while cleaning them. Be careful not to crossthread the gas line when re-installing it.
