Question about Dell E173FP 17" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Works for three seconds at a time

When turned on it displays for approx 3 seconds then blinks off. If power switch is cycled off then on again the exact same thing happens. Is this a simple fix, or should I bee looking at a new monitor? This one was built in Feb 04.

Re: Works for three seconds at a time

Its becoz there is no signal from your PC. Check the input of LCD monitor i think there might be problem with that cable! ?Mostly the cable gets weired in long run. so check thoroughly! It might work. Or else you have to repair the LCD!

If you don't use an identical monitors, then they may not work if your video card can not handle them. The "check video cable" it means the monitor does not get a signal, and it does not mean that the monitor is a problematic monitor. You can test this monitor as a single monitor (and try to connect it using first video port, and then move it to the second video port).

this is usually a short that reacts to heat. as it runs and warms up it shorts, then it cools, etc, etc. I would just replace the monitor. With the black friday deals you should be able to get a flat screen for under a hundred dollars.

suziglantz, A good TECHNICIAN should be able to pinpoint where the problem is. I suspect that as long as the unit has perfect pic and sound when it IS ON, there should be no problem for a tech to find a thermally intermittant solder joint inside the unit on some printed circuit board. Most likely place to look first would be the Power Supply board. They are called "switch-mode-power-supplys" SMPS for short. Here is what I think. Parts are soldered to the printed circuit boards at the factory. But over time the unit is subjected to large changes in temperature. You do this every time you turn "on/OFF the unit. Let's see here, 360 days x 1 ON and one OFF x 6yrs will be approx 2000 cold to hot cycles. I would think that this would not happen for at least 4000 cycles. Again, a tech type person will need to find the poorly soldered component and or the SOLID STATE component which has a thermal intermittant problem. That's about all I can recomend at this time. Do some research on the web and you will find all types of info on temperature related failures of electronic devices. Please rate this response on fixya if you feel it has been of any help to you. Your power supply has burnt out which unfortunately is extremely common in new devices. I do agree that it may be worth fixing if it is only couple years old.

Screen goes black, but power light is on (not blinking)

The problem is not with your screen. Its the problem of Video Card of your system which is unable to send Video Signals to the Screen.

Monitor won't stay on

Hey. This problem is caused by the Backlight bulb(s) blowing up.
This is fixable. You have to get into the monitor and remove the LCD screen to see what bulb you need. This is a moderately difficult job and fragile parts will easily get broken.

However by all means have a go but this is the problem that you guys have been experiencing
