On my toshiba, there dual function F-keys. on mine a little 'sun-looking' brightness icon is on F6 (brightness down) and F7 (brightness up). at the bottom left is a key labeled 'Fn'. you need to hold this down while tapping whichever F-key on your Acer is labeled with the 'brightness up' symbol. try it- it may work!
good luck!

The LCD display is failing, or the driver ic is the issue, or the B+ is to low causing the dimming effect, a resistor gone high in value would explain this.

The processor ic is not doing it's job, it controls on/off functions as well display and Samsung logo, input devices and more, if you checked out the power supply, you have covered everything within limits. This item is not cost effective to repair. Judging by your description the processor ic has been totally compromised.

How to use the function (Fn) keys on the keyboard - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p

Switching the display output location.
Switch between the computer display and an external monitor. If an external monitor is attached, the computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:
  • External monitor (CRT display)
  • Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
  • Computer display (LCD)
Notes:
  • For any operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, no additional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
  • This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
  • This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.
To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the following procedure is needed:
  1. When you log on to Windows 2000 and Windows XP for the first time, press Fn + F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window. Since in Windows 2000 and Windows XP multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs, each user needs to select the function in the initial setup window when logging on for the first time.
  2. If the Fn + F7 key combination have been assigned to a presentation scheme function, start Presentation Director, and change the settings.

Dim display on Toshiba Satellite 4090XDVD notebook

The backlight CCFL lamp provides the lighting for the LCD screen. If you have already adjusted the brightness to the max. setting and it is still dim, it means the CCFL lamp is is nearly worn out. To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp. Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

How to block VGA port on my laptop

in most cases, you can switch between display modes by using the function keys. the keys from F1 to F12 on your keyboard should contain various symbols (sometimes in blue). one of those symbols looks like the front of a monitor (on some laptops it says "LCD/CRT"). look for the key with the monitor symbol (or the text "LCD/CRT"), press and hold the Fn-key on the bottom line of your keyboard and then press the display mode function key. then you will see if the image on your display switch from one screen to the other.
if you cannot find such a key, you can disable the external display by right-clicking your desktop and choosing properties from the drop-down menu. on the "settings"-tab you should be able to see two virtual displays. click on display 2 and then uncheck the box that says "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor".

Dim display monitor

Scan rate off the charts?

My guess.. Your PC is overdriving the monitor and it is protecting itself from harm.

Startin SAFE mode (press F8 wile booting) and SAFE mode to see if it worksin Windows DEFAULT setting. Then Reboot and readjust to somethingsensible (1280*1600, 32bit, 60Hz)

My guess is that MSoft pushed a patch or SP to your box and IT replaced the dll your monitor was using.

Goto mfg and DL and reinstall the correct drivers again, If this doesn't fix it, then the LCD inverter and Tube are on the way out. You can get parts to fix that here:
LCD Repair and Cable parts

Good Luck!

Hi, Im using windows XP on my Compaq notebook. Today, when i turned my notebook on, the display is really dim. Infact, it becomes dimmer when i put notebook on charge. Its strange. please help. Thanks!

Either:

your backlight on the monitor is going out.

or

The powersave functions are out of whack.

Check your settings, reinstall the display drivers, if that doesn't solve it, it's a hardware issue.

To verify boot from a DOS boot disk or linux (something text based), and see if it's still dark. It's probably a hardware issue.

Monitor goes black but shows icons...

I'll assume this is an LCD panel screen.

If what you are saying is the screen shows up and then goes dim or starts dim, and you can see a dark image of the system starting up and then displaying Windows...

Your problem is a bad CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) at the top of the LCD panel.

If the screen is totally blank, then it may be the power inverter.

You can find many websites that sell these parts, but make sure you have the right model.

If you feel comfortable with working on computers, you can replace this part yourself. Otherwise, you may want to pay a technician to do it. Make sure to get a fixed price quote before authorizing the work

Here is a website on LCD repair for laptops, but it the same principal for display monitors.
