Dvd player problems

have a DVD player that is about 6 years old. It plays DVDs but will stick/freeze at different points through a movie. It is different points each time and we have tried 20 different movies, all with the same result (hence, it is not the DVDs themselves). Sometimes if you leave it, the DVD will come back on. Sometimes 5 seconds later, sometimes 5 minutes. Sometimes not at all. Play, stop, fast forward...nothing works except shutting the player off. There is also a mechanical sound when it freezes as if it is trying to do something but not able to. Any suggestions?
