Forgot my mac book password

The only way to change the password is to use the OS installation disc. Put it in the drive and start or restart the computer. Follow the screens until you can go to Utilities, and there will be an option for changing the master password. If you do not have the install disc, then you will need to purchase one (perhaps on discount from eBay and other online sources).

I have a macbook pro and I am "locked out" from updating software

Insert your Mac OS disk into the cd drive and restart while holding the C key to launch the system on the disk instead of your hard drive.
When you reach the desktop, look for the utilities menu and reset the master password.
You shouldn't need the existing password to do so.
