It sounds like your drive belt is excessively worn. Note that some machines will (barely) agitate with a worn belt, but when subjected to the demands of a spin cycle, a worn belt will slip indefinitely.

Kenmore Top Load Washer. Original issue was it

If the machine goes dead when it gets to the spin cycle it's the lid switch. If the the clothes are still wet after the spin it's the clutch. If the washer hums but does not spin it's either the coupler or the motor. Click HERE for a service manual. Give it a few minutes to download since it is a large pdf. Mike

the reason the clothes are wet is the washer is not shifting to high spin, does the washer have a speed switch(normal wash spin, high wash spin)if its not the speed switch than the clutch is bad,how old is the washer?mike
